greatest rivalry

Post by nael »

in the jokes forum, Barontx and myself were discussing the texas A&M/t.u. game. There are too many college football rivalries to make a good poll, but for now...which do you think is the greatest college football rivalry?
my vote goes to army/navy. true, neither team has been half way interestign to watch in a decade, but that has to be the best rivalry.
any ideas?

None of the above. One of the most intense I've seen, which results in the fans always doing something annoying (usually harmless) to each others' campuses, not to mention the divide it creates in high schools, is the Michigan State vs. University of Michigan rivalry. There's even a yearly road race which commemorates the rivalry: The Great Divide, in which fans for either side run in opposite directions on the race course and taunt each other, spray the other side with shaving cream, etc.
There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

ahh, that is a good one, just about any of the in-state rivalries could be considered: oregon vs oregon state, iowa versus iowa state, etc.

Got to be Army/Navy. Thats like their bowl game. And whether they lose all other games but still win the army/navy game, they are still happy with the season. Not to mention it is such an emotional game.

A few other rivalries....
Boston College vs Notre Dame
USC vs Notre Dame
Tennessee vs Florida
Any Florida good team vs Any Florida Good team
And there are plenty more-GOT TO LOVE college football.

I didnt even know there was a rivalry between Auburn and Alabama and I thought the rivalry between Oklahoma and Texas was merely luke-warm.

Wisconsin vs. Minnesota - the oldest and one of the most fueled rivalries in all of college sports.

@ nael - I don't think this question can be answered without regional bias coming into play. My vote was Texas/OU (sucks). The UT/A&M rivalry is rich in tradition, but Texas/OU (sucks) embodies true hatred of one another. I have spent many a Friday night in downtown Dallas during the Texas/OU (sucks) weekend. There's a reason that there is a policeman every ten yards on Commerce St.

Florida/Florida State

This is one rivalry that has not only been close, but since the two teams have been so dominant in the 90s and the game is played in the last week of the season, it often has implications beyond bragging rights, and has lately been instrumental in the national championship picture.

the minnesota / wisconsin game is a good one. there are just so many in state rivalries, but that is a good choice of two states. but it is not the oldest rivalry, harvard yale is the oldest if i am not mistaken. i don't think they have the most games played, but it is the oldest.

i thought about the florida/tennessee game, but from what i have seen it just doesn'tseem to get that fevered between the two...no more than any other game for the two schools which are both great college football schools.

Well, regarding Tenn/Florida.....don't walk downtown Knoxville wearing a Gators jersey the week of the game :D Still, the series has been so lopsided lately, I wonder just how much more the Tenn fans get into it than the Florida fans. Damn Gators  And now Spurrier is coaching my Skins....I need a drink :D

hey nael, thanks for calling BS on my acclaimed oldest college football rivalry. I honestly thought it was MN/WI. I looked it up and it turns out the oldest rivalry is lehigh and lafayette. Other oldies are harvard/yale, princeton/yale, and richmond/williamandmary. Wisconsin and Minnesota is the fifth oldest college rivalry. Perhaps I am getting things mixed up. When I heard about the MN/WI rivalry, it may have been talked up as the oldest big ten rivalry, in which case it is.

Alabama and Auburn might be the scariest rivalry in college football. Weasel, is it safe to leave your home when these two schools go at it

Best 2 rivalries are:

Ohio St. vs. Michigan- They've always been good teams and its usually a good game.

Florida vs. Florida St. - The battle of the swamp. 2 of the top teams are in the same state. Not very common. Too bad Florida St. wins most of them.

Not so fast, my friend. Florida leads the series 26-17-2, although Florida State has won the last three, and the Gators are 0-6-1 in their last seven visits to Tallahassee.
