I nominate our friend Mr Flibble for the SYM Computer Geek of the Year 2002.
1. He has the most geek points on the Official SYM Geek O'Meter™. See the evidence here.
2. He wants more. See the evidence here.
Mr Flibble's helpful responses are truly a credit to computer geeks everywhere who have an undeserved reputation for being aloof, standoffish and arrogant. Mr Flibble is none of these and he is truly worthy of this honour.
EDIT-And if you don't vote for Mr Flibble as SYM Computer Geek of the Year 2002, he will be very cross.

I nominate myself - because I am fairly new to this forum - if any of you knew me better I am sure I would have been nominated by now.

@smass: LOL
That's a very good attitude. You'll survive well in the SYM.
Belated welcome here.
@HLD: I've seen the link, and thought you two are good much in this contest.
@Everyone: Please don't rely on the geek test. We don't know, for example, how many computers in your house or how long you spend online searching new parts...

I'd have to get drunk every night and talk about virility...And those Pink elephants I'd see.
Not that I need to add anything to my previous post - but I forgot to mention that I do have a 486sx25 system with a 5 1/4 inch floppy drive that I use to play older dos based games like Starflight (best game ever, period) and some of the old SSI D&D games.
The fact that I played these games when they came out in the early eighties and still play them now further establishes my credentials - not only am I a geek now - but I have been a geek for the better part of the last two decades

So, are you going to nominate yourself, then?

I'd also like to nominate Ned Flanders who was the runner-up in the total number of geek points according to the Offical SYM Geek O'Meter™. He's also the guy who is quickest to respond to many of my boneheaded networking and hardware questions.

Phew, it seems I get out of this one! @HLD: Cryogenic cooling unit, that's pretty unbeatable... @smass: Wow, lots of systems... and 5"1/4 floppies - I made coasters of those some time after I had dissected my last 8" floppies.
Speaking of 8", I kind of miss my IBM S-34. I know my parents sure dont, since it occupied most of their garage
. I've also just done minor geeky stuff like boot up linux on a cisco 2500 router or run a spectrum emulator on a palm pilot (and a webserver, but not at the same time). Manic miner worked (barely) on that emulator. The number of systems I have running are limited to one laptop (two if we count the wife's), one machine for gaming (a nice P4/1.6GHz, 512M RAM, 4x80GB disk, ATI AIW8500DV), one firewall and a machine for, well, other stuff. The two Sun servers make too much noise, so until I find someplace desolate to put them, they're mainly decoration, and so is the Cisco 2500. So I guess I can safely say that I'm not a geek
.

I have been a geek all my life, at least in the respect of computers all the way back in the days of the IBM PC, the macintosh, vic20, commodore 64, apple II, apple IIe, atari 400. I taught myself programming in basic around age 12. I also loved games. I remember playing the original wizardry on the mac, the originial infocom games on Ibm's. Lode Runner, Tai Pan, Telengard (the first fantasy RPG or one of them circa 1983).
The commodore 64 was where things really took off for gaming and programming with me. I started writing basic games and a very low graphical check balancing software package for my parents, just so they thought I was doing something productive. I really just wanted to play the bard's tale.
I also played all those damn SSi DnD games and by age 15 I was a tekky in a computer shop fixing crap for minimum wage. for some reason I went to college for chemistry, just floored my parents, perhaps that's why.
Anyway, computers and networking still remained a hobby and back in 1998 I turned it into a profession. My main interest was to build a home LAN for gaming. High speed Inet access wasn't very available yet and most of my friends didn't have the flow to pick up computers. I continued to scavenge for parts and built several over the years to the point of having a LAN for MP gaming. It was a blast and I guess I got good enough at it to start applying for jobs. **Mother faints here after reviewing my tuition bills and career choice.**
Now I've got a server at home and several machines LANned and sharing a DSL line. Plus, I'm on my way to go pick up a GeForce4 Ti 4200 now.
Anyway, there's the business since I got nominated by the HighLord (thanks, by the way) I figured I post some stuff.
Despite all this, I'd still cast my vote for Flibble, cuz homey is down with the kernel of windows OS and Linux. He really knows and has demonstrated a lot of knowledge of the internal workings of OS. I wish I had that knowledge. When something doesn't work optimally, I usually try a few basic tips and tricks, hit things hard, reinstall or replace. If I had more smotz, I'm sure there would've been several times I could've found an easier way out with a computer problem.
//end HLD mode.
