Post your machine: Summer 2002

Post by Minerva »

Well, the original thread is more than one year old, and that's ages in the computer world. So, here's the new thread: Post your current machine's spec! (Yes, I'm bored. :o )

Only topic related spam allowed (ie. comment on others' machine. Use your common sence).

ps. Can't post mine at the moment. I'm at my work. :D

**I'll repost in early 2003 when my current New Year's Resolution ends. I've actually made it through all of 2002 without the purchase of ANY electronic hardware (including computer and audio equipment). The spike has been dangerously close to the vein concerning the new GeForce 4200/4400/4600's yet I have fought off the call. It may sound sad but I admit I am a tech junkie. My next machine will make alienware jealous.**

I was trying to get a 5¼" FDD to work in my computer, but if I used my current floppy cable, the drive didn't show up. If I used an old cable, the drive appeared, but the 3½ went missing, and the 5¼ wouldn't work. Any ideas what went wrong?

@Mr Sleep:
It's pretty sweet. And the best part is: it actually works, errr, it would work if I had any 5¼" disks to run . . .

@Flanders:
I am disappointed that you've managed to go almost nine months without buying any new electronics equipment. We may have to dock you some geek points for that. I must say, though, the new GeForce4 Ti cards do look mighty nice . . . especially when you team them up with one of the new Athlon XPs.

EDIT:
@Kameleon:
You might check and make sure that all of the connectors on your cables work.

@HLD - The connector on an old floppy cable for a 5¼ is unique as far as I can tell, so there isn't any way of knowing whether it works apart from replacing it. My main problem then is finding a floppy cable with one of those old connectors on...they don't come with them anymore, I'm just lucky I had one to try...

@Kameleon:
I got lucky because I found a 3½" FDD with the old-style connectors to go with my 5¼" FDD with the same connectors. If you surf around the internet or flea markets you might be able to rustle up a 3½" FDD with the old connectors.

The age old problem, kind of like Betamax ;) - since it isn't the industry standard one can't find anything to run on them.

Indeed the GeForce 4 TI's are lovely, GTA3 runs without any problems at all, i can have trails and everything. The only game i can get to jump is Morrowind, but then that is hardly surprising, the pixel water is also beautiful, just as the shiny water is in NwN...you know you want one, treat yourself, you deserve it :p :)

You can get one for under $150 it makes sense, they are so cheap now, you'll really regret not buying one, look at all the gorgeous scenery you are missing out on. Think about it, can you really deprive yourself of such a beautiful and influential piece of merchandise?

Gotta agree with you Sleepy, Morrowind water on a GF4 is jaw-dropping. Absolutely amazing. On my GF2 it looks like...sewage. No really ;) Go on Ned, you know you want to! :D

I have loads of old 5¼" disks from old PC magazines, which I used to use back in the day of my Amstrad 1640 (whoah, that brings me back. Thing didn't even have a hard drive :D ) Some good shareware games then, but nowadays Win2k won't even run them, not to mention the slight problem with the speed...If you think I had to turn my 20MHz 386 down off turbo to 10MHz to be able to play some of them, you can imagine how silly these things are with a 2GHz processor... :p
