Believe it or not, I usually send my thief to take care of 'em (the Fire Giant Elite are a bit more difficult). They tend to go down rather quickly when backstabbed.

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

Freeze their butts

Has your mage got Cone of Cold or Ice Storm? That finishes them off quick.

The Giant's Thaco is the real problem, because they absorb substantial damage and hit you a few times before you can take them down, some things to try...

Sarevok with Silver Sword
Boots of haste run & gun
Pets and Ice Storm or other Area Affect
Loading Quicksave ;)

As usual with tougher enemies, make sure to focus all your party's efforts upon one at a time of them. Once dead, move on to the next.

If you throw a Greater Malison, they are very susceptible to Finger of Death

I would assume the same goes for Wail of the Banshee, although this is an untested method...

Sarevok (or Minsc or Korgan) with (greater) whirlwind (the high level ability) or Improved Haste (from spell or objects) and a good weapon should be able to take down 1 fire giant in 1 round.
(Sarevok with greater whirlwind sometimes managed to take down 2 in one round.... but maybe I was just dreaming then) :D

If you haven't whirlwind attacks/improved haste... uhm... maybe you need some more experience before taking up Yaga Shura's army...

If you find WK easier, do it first and get all the experience/equipment you can out of there!

Also... Some potions of giant strenght could be useful just to even the scores :)

Also, if you're a fighter/mage, use a lot of stoneskins, so they will never hurt you. Have Jaheira use Ironskins, too... you and her should use whirlwind attacks, too...

The first romance talk with jaheira comes when you get to the pocket plane for the first time, IIRC.
Where we came from, we don't know
Where we're going.... (even worse)
And about who we could be, we actually have trouble in clearly defining the term "to be" in the first place...

IIRC, the Fire Giants deal both slashing and fire damage - so they'll still hit him for about 6-10 fire damage per hit if he's (or Jah) stoneskined.
It's still better then taking another 20 slashing damage, of course, but keep in mind that your spells can be still interrupted.

I'm playing through again, and sent Haer'Dalis (mislead and offensive spin activated) to handle all the fire giants & baddies in the Forest of Mir area. He nailed them all with his Sword of Chaos and Dagger of the Star, and a couple of sunfires. I plan to use the same strategy at the temple.

Sunfire?
I thought Fire Giants are highly resistant, if not immune, to fire?

I used sunfire on the baddies who were with the fire giants. ;)

Throw a Blur and a Mirror Image as well, and you should be fine. As the Mirror Image won't last long, it might be a good idea to have another one in a Minor Sequencer.

Yea, Mislead will probably work great on them.
On the other hand, mislead works great on any enemy who can't see through Invisibility... :D :p

I just throw loads of area affect spells at them like horrid wrilting and death fog etc. When they've got down to badly hurt or near death they are easy meet. It's cheezy but it gets the job done :p

There's nothing "dumb" about letting your best Fighters do their job while your spellcasters do theirs. That's what they're for. :)

BTW, the fire giants are easy to fight on the second level of Yaga-Shura's lair. If you want to, you can get their attention and then run back through either of the first two doors (the fire giants are too big to fit through them) and pelt them with missiles until they're dead. It's not exactly the way a hero would do it, but it gets the job done. :)
