I found a note on the body of a messanger right before entering the farmlands. Does this belong to someone or are they already dead?
The journal in the destroyed homestead. Does it go back to a settler in the Fort or is it to let you know the people the note was being sent to is dead?

I think it's just there for the atmosphere. There are a lot of notes and journals and such that are just "for your information." They give a sense of what's going on, and help build into things. I could be wrong, but that was my take on the matter.
