Can't complete quests
Can't complete quests
I just discovered this game and I must say, I'm really impressed. But I have a problem. For some reason, I can't seem to complete most quests. Basically my journal will say that I was supposed to return to a particular NPC when I completed a task, but when I complete the task and return to the NPC, they won't talk to me. Now, they're not mad at me and refusing to talk, but when I left click them (with the little dialog cursor) no dialog comes up. Any other NPC in the room will talk, but the quest NPC won't let me finish the quest. This has happened now with at least 3 different quests. My journal is getting cluttered up... hehe
I'm running Torment with the 1.1 patch, using WinXP. My PC is an AMD Athlon 1800+, 512mb DDR RAM, on a Soyo Dragon+ motherboard.

OK, for example, in the Gathering Dust bar, some Dusty wants you to "find out what's troubling the Mausoleum". So I went to the Mausoleum, kill the bad guy, the spirits are happy and can rest again, I return to the Dusty and she won't talk.
OK, this problem has actually solved itself somehow... hehe Last night after failing to talk to the Dusty to complete the quest, I quicksaved and quit. This morning while responding to this thread, I started Torment up and loaded my quicksave so I could tell you the name of the NPC. This time she talked to me and I could complete the quest.
So I guess next time that happens, I'll just save, exit, load it back up and try again.

No offense, but I wouldn't unload and reload the game without checking BIS' website to confirm that information.
Besides, it sounds like you just had some momentary code problems that were solved after exiting and reentering the game. You're not running anything major in the background when the game's on, are you?

It may indeed be as you say. But if it were well-known, I'd expect major websites that provide either the patch, or the game, to offer this. Yet Gamespy (for instance) merely offers the 1.1 patch, and doesn't suggest what you've done. The old main website (now at http://www.planescaipe-torment.com) doesn't mention it. Voodoo Files doesn't mention it. Computer Games.com doesn't mention it in its library of downloadable patches. Planet Baldursgate's forums don't mention it. Socerer's Place forums don't mention it.Originally posted by Platter
Sorry, but it is well known. The 2 CD version is already 1.1 and messes up if you install the patch onto it.
In fact, the only place I could find a mention of a difference between the 4 and 2-CD versions was on a German website; and the relevant post declared that the 2-CD version was completely stable, with or without the patch.
You may be right about the problem, or wrong; but your definition of what's well-known within the given field of people who are familiar with the product may need a bit of fine-tuning.

How about the players? There are several Torment forums and this one seems to be the most isolated of them all.Originally posted by fable

On other Torment forums a problem caused by the patching of the 2 CD version (and fixed by removing it) is posted about once a week.
Besides - you have to remember that when all those places posted the patch the 2 CD version had not come out yet.
Oh and Interplay said so

As I said, I checked around for PS:T forums that discussed problems with the patch. I didn't find any. I specifically mentioned the names of sites that didn't carry what you've stated was so well known. Perhaps you can list some forums that are "less isolated" than our poor one, which hardly meets your standards? Forums that discuss this problem, after all, once a week, must surely be worth knowing about.

Several of the sites I've checked regularly update their information about games and patches. Nothing was mentioned about this.
Oh and Interplay said so.
Well! Why didn't you say so! That would have saved you the trouble of having to make sweeping statements about what is, and isn't, known about PS:T patches.
Only problem is, you didn't give us a link to those comments--just to the general website. I checked around, and couldn't find the comment you've mentioned, about the patch messing up the 2-CD version of the game. Do you have something more exact you can offer?

I didn't post it before because I just looked for it.
The link I posted above has the quote that is under it. No extra clicking required, it's right there.
If you are still having trouble;
At interplay.com under games click "Games A-Z" then "Planescape: Torment" then under the big torment logo there are buttons. One of them is an arrow pointing down. That is downloads.
The Official Black Isle Torment Forum is mostly what I was talking about. For your convenience, here are the results in it for the search query "patch."

The reason I didn't notice your quote was because it wasn't part of the link. General Web forum courtesy provides direct links to answers, rather than links to general sites, followed by a statement by the author of the post, claiming that this is fact.
And the websites that are so much less isolated than ours--which you describe as the most isolated, despite the fact that we're more active than all but one site I can name...? The ones that discuss this problem on a weekly basis. I know we'd all welcome knowing of other PS:T websites that are so much more active. Care to share?

Like I just said;

Also;
PlanetBG Torment Forum is also more active than here.

The link is a direct link to the quote. Not the general site. The general site is http://www.interplay.com. The address I provided was http://www.interplay.com/interact/downl ... p?gameid=9 where the quote is.Originally posted by fable

No need to get annoyed, @Platter. I was merely explaining why your link didn't seem to serve the puprose for which you intended it.
As for the forum you mention: yes, it has about 6 posts a week. We sometimes do that, sometimes not. Can't say I see from this that GB's PS:T forum is "the most isolated of them all," as you claim; I know of at least half a dozen more (of which I named a couple, above) that offer less than we do. Nor do I see anything remotely approaching what you state elsewhere, that "On other Torment forums a problem caused by the patching of the 2 CD version (and fixed by removing it) is posted about once a week." None of this backs up your negative statement about GameBanshee, or your claim for other forums.

That second link will show you many posts about the patch messing up the 2 CD version.

Calm down.
I'm just ragging ya because of your high-and-mighty manner when you proclaimed, "Sorry, but it is well known" about the problem concerning patching the 2-CD version. What I suspect you meant was, it's been listed from time to time on another board: that much is true, and your info is welcome, here. Your attitude that this forum is "the most isolated of all," however, is somewhat less welcome. If you don't want to get annoyed or prodded, then maybe you shouldn't make proclamations telling us how little we know, and how certain facts we aren't aware of are the general knowledge of so many.

@Platter, as your posts show, you weren't baited into anything. Your statements were made without provocation. What I suspect both of us did was lead this thread off-topic--and in that, I'm considerably more guilty than you.
However, if you still feel that I in fact did what you stated, PM or email the site owner. He has (I think) a well-deserved reputation for fairness.
