Culture and Characteristic (No Spam i think)

Post by CM »

It is believed that culture and traditions have an influence on the way people emphasize certain characteristics in a person. I was wondering how much of that is true. In Pakistan loyalty is a major characteristic which defines friends and relationship. Loyalty is by far the most important positive characteristics in any person from our community, even if it ends up being negative. With my pakistani friends, it is a common thing to agree with your friend even if he is wrong, because it is a show of loyalty in public but behind the scenes you may berate him for being stupid. The empahsis is not on the truth or what is right, it is your loyalty to your friend.

While betrayal is taken as something worse than killing some one or just as bad. If you betray someone, that could range from not giving them a buck of a coke or to dating their sister without permission, you are blacklisted for life. That again is unfair, because they feel betrayal at the stupidest of things. I am specifically dealing with loyalty, however any other characteristic can be discussed.

Since we have so many people from different cultures it would be interesting what one culture emphasizes as being the most important/ideal characteristic in a person. Oh yeah another one for women is being fair. It is far easier for a ugly woman to be considered beautiful because she is of fair skin, while someone with dark or darker skin will be considered ugly, even though she is extremely beautiful - this I have seen in a real life case. Anyway your views?

In theory Australians value a "fair go" above all else, however this doesn't often come through.

My views? Send me one of those Indian girls and I'll look into it... ;) One of my friends has a thing for Japanese women (fortunately he doesn't frequent GB, otherwise Minerva would've stabbed him a long time ago ;) ) whilst I myself find the classical female indian facial structure to be extremely attractive, so I guess it all boils down to personal taste.
