Anywhere nice in the summer?

I'm off again.

This time, I have an excuse of a conference in Granada.

Since I have been traveling nice places a lot recently (tough work, you know...), I just like to know if anyone else have travel plan this summer.

indeedy. i'm currently led to believe that i'll be visiting some friends in Nordwijk (in the netherlands) for a weekend, then travelling to the south of france - near bordeaux - to stay with my great-aunt and uncle in the house they bought at retirement and have been renovating ever since. should be naice.

Good for you Minerva, I hope the conference will be interesting

Whereas I love to travel as a tourist, I don't at all like travelling in my work. When I go to conferences, it means hard work 10-11 hours a day, and dinners where you continue to work. It's not glamourous at all - you never have time to see anything else than airports and boring conference centers. This must be a lot better in your line of research since I assume it requires you to go out and study buildings and places

My plans for the summer are to take a short vacation = 2-2.5 weeks in Europe. Nothing special, just getting away to do some hiking and perhaps meet some friends.

I will attend two conferences this summer, perhaps three depending on what happens at my lab. I will try to take some time off later this summer, but we haven't decided where to go yet. As usual, my job makes planning difficult, so we'll see where I end up - I often decide very late depending on what I feel like at that moment

@CE: Yes, it is probably the best part of my study... I always have an excuse for travels where I want to go.

I have another conference in September, but it won't involve any travel at all... It'll be held in here and I'll give a paper. Conference itself is not glamourous for us either. It's very academic in old fashion way, though often mentally stimulating. It might be different if I chose much more popular subject, but there's no point for me to do the research on it in that case.

@Minerva: I agree that conferences can often be intellectually stimulating. The problem with my field is that it's highly multidisciplinary, so there will always be stuff that is neither related to what I do, nor interesting in itself. Another problem is that most of our conferences are very large, so there will be hundreds of workshops, seminars, lectures and symposia to choose from, and it's not always that you choose the right thing...

What is the paper you are going to give about? Do you enjoy presenting your research?

Providing the Institute allows me to present something not related to Britain or Maghreb (that's the main topic of the conference), I'll give about trade and trade route in the Western Mediterranean during the time of "discovery" (how/if it changed and recovered from the initial shock, that sort of thing). Ooo, I hate the presentation. I don't mind the research part, though.

My subject is also interdiscipline, but during the conference, I can pick sessions I'm interested in, and quietly go away other times...

I'm going to the Tanglewood music festival.
It is a music festival which takes place every summer in Lenox, Massachusetts.
It is mostly classical type music. I'm going because John Williams has a few concerts there.
It is about a 3 hour drive from New York.

@Aegis: Actualy, I'm visiting some relatives in Vancouver, it will be my second time to Canada. The first time I went a couploe of years ago to Toronto and, yes, Niagra Falls.
Any places you can recomend there?

Okay. I have no idea about the geography of the "New World" (I'm a 15-16th century specialist, you see).

Contrary to many people, I enjoy presentation - the most enjoyable part of it is when time allows a discussion to follow. There is so much yet unknown about human brain functioning, and I always find it interesting to hear how other researchers view my findings.

Re conference programs, my institute unfortunately expects me to attend to a lot of things when they have paid me to go somewhere - last time I was close to falling asleep during a 2-hour workshop about mathematical algoritms suitable for brain imaging...Zzzz.....
