Fun LAN games

Post by Rob-hin »

We finally did it. We sort of have a network at home! :D
We linked our pc with my dads laptop via a hub. I didn't expect mutch of the laptop since games are usually unplayable. But he does the trick, we can even play Quake 3 against eachother.

But the games we play are much of the same, Quake and Half-Life. We tried Midtown Madness 2 but it doesn't work somehow.

So we are thinking about more fun game to play on our lan. But we are kind of idealess. (this is where you come in :D )

What games are fun to play on a network? (anything :) ) Don't worry about system recurements (sp?), if it doesn't work... we'll find out!

edit: Feel free to share fun network gaming experiences :) , perhaps it will even help thinking of games.

UNREAL TOURNAMENT !!!!!!!
Now now now. It's fantastic. Capture the flag's cool too, and using cheats to make the game ultra fast and frantic is always good. Plus you wouldn't believe the satisfaction of hearing that deep manly voice saying.....

Firstly, I love the Leon avatar Rob-hin. Great film and great picture :D

As for games over LAN, all I ever seem to play is Quake III and Unreal Tournament. (Head shot...Head shot...MMMOOONNNSSSTTTEEERRR KILL!!!!!). Oh well...Age Of Empires or Red Alert is good if you're into that sort of thing...

@Dottie, anything that is fun. :)

@frogus and Kameleon, UT is a good idea. Been thinking about that too. But I've got 2 first person shooters already. I'm kinda looking for something else. (but feel free to chat about it :) , there is no no spam policy)

(Leon is cool, isn't he :D
Too bad hitman is single player only)

Personal favourite is UT, a recent addition to my mod list has been Bullet time, well worth keeping an eye out for :) The mutators is one of the things that makes UT so very excellent :)

What about a rallying game like Colin Mcrae 2, i found the netcode a little buggy, but all round it is pretty good to network with lots of different options. Midtown Madness is a good laugh as well.

Ground Control is excellent for both single and multi play.

Oh yeah - GTA2 is a laugh for a while in multiplayer...

Sleep (or anyone) have you ever played InstaGib JumpMatch Low Gravity on DM_Morpheus, with 100% air control? That rocks, as well as a bit of sniping on CTF_FacingWorlds. Hehehe. :D

GTA 3 has gone gold and should be released throughout Europe soon :)

I heard that GTA3 on the PC won't have any multiplayer support due to them wanting to give the "full single player experience" :(

The Heroes of Might and Magic series is kinda fun. :)
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

Ghost Recon and Desert Siege. It's a different sort of first person shooter. You play multiplayer missions as a team. The AI is the best I've seen in a first person shooter. enemies feigning death, others laying down suppressing fire while a select few move in to take you out execution style. It really is a lot of fun, especially with zero respawns.
Crush enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of the women.

Delta Force 2 (i dunno about 3 - haven't played it) one-on-one.

the tension is painful

oh, and diablo 2 is quite interesting if you finally want to find out if you really could kick your mate's whack ass with your level 23 b'stard-lunatic. or if you want an infinite supply of perfect gems and a pool of nice items.
Here where the flattering and mendacious swarm
Of lying epitaths their secrets keep,
At last incapable of further harm
The lewd forefathers of the village sleep.

If you only have to computers connected I would prefer strategy before shooters, but thats just me.

If you have alot of patience Close Combat 4 or 5 is fun, 4 focus more on armour and have slightly better maps while 5 will give you more controle over you force pool.

If you have endless supply of time I must recomend Europa Universalis 2, The problem with this game is that the computer is rather stupid so having another human player makes it much more interesting (as always) But it eats alot of time in multiplay.

Operation Flashpoint isnt a strategy game but would be great fun with only 2 players if there were more cooperative missions. Perhaps its possible to download such things and in that case It would be great.

Hmm, looks like UT is pretty popular and I would have to agree. The shorter 'romps' tend to be better because everyone can stay focussed :D I enjoy a good game of Red Alert 2, but some people get a bit bored after a while (Kameleon :p ;) ).

As regards the mechanics of getting stuff working, if you have more people come round with their computers, make sure you are all running at least win 2k. ME is okay but still has some problems in my experience. Average is that about 1 person in 6 will not be able to connect to the network for one reason or another and you don't want to waste time solving problems you could have avoided :)

That is a problem you will become used to...i know most games i have played have poor netcode :(

You could try Serious Sam (1 or 2) both are fun over co-op.

Tony Hawks (2 or 3) is also good fun depending on how much time one spends on the Single Player, i have spent many an hour on SP just for the skill required for MP :)

Hmm, haven't thought about SS or TH just yet. TH sounds cool, let's see if it is cheap since it is a bit older.
BTW, just found out we DO have UT installed, 26 GB is a big place. :D (don't start that your's is bigger. :D ;) )
