BG2 problem

Post by Beowulf »

When playing BG2, I get the following message every half hour or so, and then the comp crashes:

exception OE at 0028: C002C622 in VxD NTKERN(01) + 0000AA26.
This was called 0028:COD 301F9 in VxD NTKERN (01) + 0000E5FD.

And sometimes it just reboots without warning

Any help would be much appreciated.

Are you playing Multiplayer or using your network or even have a network installed?

Perhaps it is a lack of memory, does it happen at points in the game where there is a heavy amount of traffic on the comp?

@ Mr Sleep

I'm playing single player, no network installed.

I have almost a gig of free memory, and 128 megs ram (64 recommended).

It happens when I click one of the buttons (mage spells, etc.), then freezes, then displays the blue error screen.

That sounds to me like the system hanging because of a lack of resources, it might be worth clearing out your cache folder (it sometimes works) reapply patches and do a scandisk, it might be part of the game is in a bad sector or something

Is this happening in the City under the sea (can't recall it's name at the mo) if so it is a problem with that area, i came across it several times.

@Beowulf - a few questions:

1. What version of windows are you using?
2. Have you upgraded from an earlier version?
3. What type of soundcard do you have?
There are 10 types of people in the world - those who understand binary and those who don't.
I think I think, therefore I might be.

How do I find out?

I'm running Windows 98, which shipped with the computer.

You can check the soundcard type by clicking start -> settings -> control panel, and double click on system. On the devices tab there is a section called 'Sound, Video and Game Controllers'. Click on the plus to open this section and take note of all the items there.

If you're running a version of Windows 98 that came pre-installed on your computer then this may not the the problem I'm thinking of, but it may be worth checking anyway.

Also, what version of DirectX are you using? To check this, click start and select run, and type in dxdiag and click run. On the DirectX properties box that comes up you should be able to see which version you are using.

Well, I've had a good search for answers on this and have found the following causes:

1. Sound driver not being loaded properly, or sound card not being detected correctly. This usually only occurs after an upgrade to Windows 98SE from either 95 or 98. The resolution is to remove the sound driver from the device manager and have the system redetect it, however, this problem seems to relate mostly to the ESS PCI soundcards only.

2. Microsoft Sidewinder USB joystick loading 2 copies of the driver on startup. Resolution is to remove the older version of the driver.

3. Driver conflict. This one is a bit harder to solve. You may need to take your computer to a professional for assistance.

4. Defective RAM module. Solution is to replace the suspect memory module. You'll need to go back to the company you bought the machine from.

I hope this helps. In searching several tech support forums I've discovered very few errors relating to NTKERN, and the ones I have found mostly relate to the problems I've outlined above.
