A few years ago, there's a survey regarding "Food the Britons abroad miss most" in a newspaper. I can't recall the full list, but followings are some of them.
Marmite (Of course. They have odd taste buds, those British... ) Tea British Sausage Gooseberry Marmalade
I can't remember anything else. I believe there were a few dishes, like Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding, Cottage Pie, and Fish & Chips.
Any thoughts? What will you miss if you are living abroad for long time?

Having moved out of the deep south a few years ago, I discovered that there is nobody north of Virginia who knows how to correctly make grits. Even transplanted southerners seem to have forgotten.

One thing I won't miss is the dreaded Meat Pie Floater(a meat pie drowned in pea soup and tomato sauce).

don't worry newcastle is exported just about everywhere.
and since i was recently moved from texas, there are SEVERAL food items desperately in the north.
first and foremost...brisket, and for that matter, any kind of BBQ, their idea of BBQ is chopped up ham drowned in sauce and onions...it is so vile.
queso - velveeta melted with a couple chopped peppers does not make queso!!!!
mexican food in general.
fried chicken is another southern food that yankees just haven't gotten the hang of along with grits.
i miss lone star beer and shiner bock.
I would be a serial killer if i didn't have such a strong distaste for manual labor

Grits are a delicacy in the deep south made from ground corn. Go to Grits.com to learn more. My preference is for corn grits with a little bit of cheese or just loaded up with butter (real butter, not margarine).

Originally posted by Ned Flanders I must say the bbq, con queso, and mexican food I've had here in the north rivals what I've had in the south
That's because the Mexican food that American's think of isn't really Mexican. It's more of a Tex-Mex or southwestern style that has bastardised Mexican food from its original recipes to reflect the American palate and the capacity of Americans to afford more expensive ingredients in their food. Most Mexican food I've eaten in Mexico is very plain in its presentation and loaded up with spices and peppers. If your idea of Mexican food is Rio Bravo or Taco Bell, you'll be sorely disappointed if you visit our neighbours south of the border.

Some of the things I'd miss will sound strange to some of you. Thats because as far as I know, they are typically Dutch.
Pindakaas >> Peanutbutter (ok, not this one )
Hagelslag >> Choclade sprinklers(? Not sure anout this one)
Frikandel
Donner >> (turkisch meat)
Mexicano
Krocket
Spam D)
Worstenbrood >> bread with meat inside... (no, nothing like an hotdog)
Chips with Mayo, Curry and Pindasauce (sp?) >> known to us as a patatje oorlog. (Chips war)
I would not be seen eating at the Bell or Rio Bravo. We've got a joint close by home owned and run by mexicans. They don't even really speak english but they cook up some mean authentic mexican. I learned a lot from eating there and reading online.
I suppose it may be a hasty generalization of me to say the mexican food in the north rivals that in the south. Truly, it does not but in nael's post, I got the message that no one in the north knows true mexican food. It is just a lot more difficult to find as the bastardizations run rampant in these parts. Seafood is another problem here in the upper midwest. Having grown up in New England, I get a chuckle out of being invited to red lobster and how most people will pass by the live lobsters in the grocery store.

People in West Virginia try to pass off Red Lobster as seafood, too. Frankly, it disgusts me. I grew up in Tallahassee, FL, which is not far from the Gulf of Mexico, where you can get some mean oysters, shrimp and shark. I especially liked being able to go to a restaurant late in the afternoon, watch the staff unload a boat full of fish and eat the catch for dinner.
I don't care what anyone says, there is no measure of flash-freezing fish that can make seafood retain its fresh taste. And there's nothing like watching the sun set over the water with the smells of a fish camp kitchen to go with an ice cold beer or margarita.

The best seafood I've ever had still has to be at the little shacks right on the water in massachusetts and maine. These guys fish for a living, keep some of the catch, and cook it up and have a few tables in these dingy establishments. I always thought they did it so they wouldn't be drinking alone at night. The food was amazing, you're right on HLD, you can't replace the taste of having dinner that was caught the same afternoon.

Basicly I can adjust to most countries food - I tried the Indian bread (which sadly I've got no idea what it's called)and liked it - But I'm not getting taco anymore due a thread open on SYM sometime ago
@Grunty - as ever - a man afer my own Northern heart!
I miss things 167 miles down south in the same country!!! Pie and mushy peas, chips and curry sauce, proper fritters!! (a slice of fish contained between two slices of potato and battered) not these crap risseroles!! - I can get those from Sainsburys.
I miss...a proper *pint* glass - regardless of your poison - a real pint glass that allows for a head of beer - the Southerners are tight and want their glass full...the Northereners appreciate a good head (shut up!) and will measure their allowance...the Southerners want their flat pint filling to overflowing - not the way to drink a true pint IMO....
