The Unknown Bands

I think a lot of people listen to some groups that aren't really known about. This here thread is made for everyone to post up their favourite bands and what sort of music they play. Let us know about them people!

I'll start, in the UK, very few people know Saves The Day, I myself only heard them on a music tv channel, and I was captivated by their meaningful lyrics and powerful music. At Your Funeral, to me, is one of the finest pieces of music I've heard...

I have always loved the Residents. They aren't exactly unknown, but in my experience most people don't know them although they have been active since the 1970's. The Residents play highly experimental music, some would argue it's over the limit for what can be defined as music. It could perhaps be called "art music", as some highly experimental contemporary symphonic music usually is. They have made several concept albums with specific themes, and they have their own record label. Their most well known albums are probably Eskimoo and Commercial Album, the first inspired by traditional inuit music and mythology, the second consisting of 40 1 minute pieces. They are also known for never having revealed their identities (probably band members have changed over the years) and for they extravagant eye-ball costumes they used on stage in the 1980's. Jimmy Lunceford! They had one of the best arrangers back in the early 1940s, and given their showmanship, could make Duke Ellington look like the Salvation Army when performing live. Definitely worth listening to.

Usally the music i listen to is rather well known in a specific sub-culture, but isnt commonly played on MTV and such.

Currently Die Form is a favourite. The music is imo very good, but to enjoy them you have to be able to stand thier pretentiousness and their masochistic attitude.

Labiach is another good band from former Yugoslavia. They are also quiet pretentious, but good nevertheless. They are also rather experimental, and so a part of their work is crap, you have too look some to find the good songs.

Yeah, I like "At Your Funeral"

I don't know how widespread they are (I've only seen them on MTV2), but I love Finger Eleven - especially "Sick of it All". They've got some heavy riffs mixed with nice lyrics.

Tantric is another MTV2 hit. Come to think of it ... most of my favorite bands that were unknown are now (or have been) on MTV2. Saves the Day was on it, Nickelback, Cold, Spineshank, and some others.

Alright, here's one: Stereomud. Their stuff flows b/w heavy and soft (alternative style), but their lyrics are amazing. "Perfect Self" is an awesome song.

i've actually heard of the residents.

obscure artists i listen to are all texas artists:
robert earl keen, pat green, cory morrow, kevin smith, kevin fowler, gary p. nunn, jerry jeff walker, and many more. it's music with soul in it, not the mass produced crap shoved down the people's throat by MTV and record exec's. they are all singer/songwriters who sing abotu things that mean somethign to them.jerry jeff walker and gary p. nunn are older than the others and had a bit of fame back in the 70's. gary p. nunn sung london home sick blues, last thing i needed ( first thing this morning), and some others. jerry jeff has a decent following still amongst college kids throughout at least the south.
robert earl keen is probably the most popular out of the ones i listed. his big song is The Road Goes on Forever. oh, and Merry Christmas from the Family is his song as well, i have heard several bands cover both of these songs.

saves the day is a really really popular band where i live, they're on all the radio stations, everyone has saves the day t-shirts and everybody listens to them, but whatever. Bands i like that aren't so popular would be, Thrice, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, AFI is pretty popular but maybe not in other places, Danzig, Poison the Well, Nuclear Rabbit, Lagwagon and NOFX are popular here, Nada Surf and tons tons more.

LOL, I agree, no one at my school knows their music! Their newest album is quite powerful...

Where do you live? Cause where I live Saves The Day has been played only about three times in a year. I've never even heard KROQ play any Lagwagon or NoFX.

KROQ sometimes plays NOFX, but not often, the station that plays saves the day is 94.3, it's on all the time, they play a lot of small and local bands, i live in irvine, if you know where that is.

Have quite a following in the UK, but hardly anyone knows of them in Australia.

A shame really as they need to go overseas to make it big.

The Frames.

I only have their latest album (For The Birds), which is absolutely amazing. I believe all the other ones are as good.

They use violins quite a lot.

i went to a concert this afternoon, saw something coperate and unwritten law, they're kinda popular but not that much, so i thought i'd tell you all. they're both pretty good, but the singer for unwritten law wouldn't give me his hat, i am still mad.

well a great band here in Holland is KANE!
i think they will break trough in the UK and USA sooner or later so look out for them!
maybe u already heard from them, please let me know if u did 'cause i wanna know what u think of them.
i think they are THE absolute best Rock group in Holland, there is also another great brand new rock group in Holland called Di-Rect who worked with Kane and are also very good.

Love their album, though I hear their live show is somewhat disappointing...

Bands from all over the place seem to get more famous in the UK than their home countries, like there are quite a few US bands getting a lot of coverage over here and don't seem to be very well known in the US... The Strokes, The White Stripes, for example. Plus Australia insists on sending all its soap stars over here to make pop music

Stop it already!

Let's see, some obscure British bands I like... Spiritualized, Embrace, the Beta Band, the Electric Soft Parade, Badly Drawn Boy (possibly getting more famous as he has just done the soundtrack for About A Boy), Supergrass, Gomez, Pulp (well-known in the UK, but not elsewhere AFAIK), the Charlatans, Belle and Sebastian, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci... I could go on and on. They're mostly indie/rock type stuff, some of them (Spiritualized, Beta Band) are a bit more weird and experimental.

@Georgi: Pulp is extremly well known in Sweden, (or are there more than 1 UK band with this name?) I can't think of anyone who doesn't know of them except my grandmothers generation. I liked This is hardcore a lot.

Supergrass and Charlatans are also quite well known here. British music generally receives much attention is Sweden, we Swedes seem to have a soft spot for British culture. (Sweden is also the country where British comedy is most popular.)
