PS: Torment (curser problem)

Post by debszelda »

PS: Torment (cursor problem)

Gotta problem with my cursor in my Torment game. It seems to leave pieces of itself behind when I use it to click on any items in the game. It is a livable situation but would rather not have it happen at all if possible.

I had this problem once before with BG1, but contributed it to a scratched up game that once the disc was replaced and game reinstalled it was working fine.

...but this is a totally new game, no scratches and fresh from the box.

If anyone has any suggestions, just let me know.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure that the game is not the cause of the problem but your video card (as sleepy also said :) ). There are some reports about some silimar video card problems. Some of the video cards do you work well with the game. Either update your video card drivers or turn on software mirroring from the option menu. Hope that helps.

Okay I think I found the info, if it is not right let me know or tell me where I can find it under the control panel of my computer. When installing game the prompt came up for Direct X...but it stated mine was compatible, so I didn't update.

Diamond Viper V770D manufacturer Nvidia

As for patches I have the two-disc version so patches should be included if I'm reading other posts correctly.

The cursor problem is only when I'm clicking on interface items (putting items into quick slots, loading weapons...etc) and when it comes to the actual game play arena (for example clicking to talk to a NPC or attacking the cursor acts normally).

I also have IWD, HOW, TOTL and have no problem with my cursor when playing that game or its expansions.

Don't know if this helps ya'all any...because any help is appreciated.

Thanks

DirectX shouldn't be a problem since PT came some time ago and requires a version 6.0 of DirectX or newer. If you think that you have a previous version of DirectX or you don't know i believe that the game comes with DirectX 6 and you will be able to install them from the CD if you didn't when installing. You can also download the latest version from MS website. BTW what OS are you using?

Not to sound like i am working for Nvidia or something but isn't a Diamond Viper quite old, it might be worth an upgrade one can get some very good cards for relatively cheap prices now :)

This problem used to happen to me on BG1, i think the patch successfully alleiviated the problem.

Have you tried the software mirroring option as Demis suggested? :)

Windows 98 Second Edition.

:)

I've done recent defragmentings...my computer is only 2 1/2 years old...Dell...700 mhz...Intel Pentium III processor...128 RAM

I recently also installed the McAfee 6.0 Virus Scan, just before installing Torment...but usually turn that off when playing.

I had BG1 installed too at one time...but that has since been uninstalled.

Do you have any other programs running in the background, it might be a lack of memory for that specific program :) try closing everything but systray and explorer and giving that a go; i will go into specifics if required :)

Okay, I'll give that a go later on today after work and see what develops...Thanks

btw...if I were to update a video card what would be a good recommendation in a reasonable price range.

I will also be getting IWD II when it is polished and released.

Personally i would go for something in the Geforce range; a lot of the Geforce 2's are selling pretty cheap now. Of course you could get a Geforce 4 if you have the money ;)

Well you will need one of the next generation video cards for that i would presume :)

I'll vote for nvidia too, it has been a while since i gave a thought about buying a video card other than one of the nvidia series. If you have the money or you what to get a video card .. actually a GPU ... :) that will last then go for Geforce4, it is an investment that will last for years something that you don't usually have when buying a PC, i have a geforce 256 for almost 3 years now and so far i had no problems. In the other hand if you can't affort it there are several MX versions of nvidia GPUs that have a resonable price and great prerformance.

@ Mr Sleep...well I closed everything out (doing CTRL + ALT + DEL)except systray and explorer...still acting the same

@ Demis...I have Direct X7 installed, no change there

...so it sounds like it *is* the video card?..so I see a purchase in my future. I had a feeling an upgrade was going to be necessary but trying to avoid the inevitable I guess.

If you can think of anything else...let me know. I can always uninstall Torment and reinstall because I'm not even out of the mortuary yet...so that's no big deal, honest.

Thanks all for the help

d/l the latest patch anyway and see if that corrects it, more likely than not it is the Graphics card acting up :(

Is it okay to download the patch even though I've heard it is supposed to be included in my 2-disc version?

Yes, Mr Sleep is right. Downloading and installing the patch (again) will not affect the saved games.

It will however remove the Xp that can be continuously gained from Ravel in the Sensoriums :o

Good fortune to you Debs :)
