PC creation-needs tips

Post by Gabi »

I have just about finished BGI with the TOSC expansion pack . My PC was a female human ranger with long sword proficiency. I had Jaheira, Khalid, Kivan, Garrick & Imoen in my party. My favourite character was Minsc but I left him in Nashkel after rescuing Dynaheir and he attacked me every time I spoke to him after that(gather I shouldn't leave him there) Mostly I played fighters, in particular, slings, bows+arrows, which worked very well for most fights, and used very few spells. Now I would like to play a second game, with a mage or wizard and use lots of magic. I need tips for the creation of my next PC, who I would like to be a spell caster. How do you get them to be able to memorise a lot of spells?. Which NPCs are good to have along? I would like my party to be good/neutral aligned, but for fun I would probably pick up a few bad characters. Any tips/suggestions for PC creation would be appreciated.

Well, that depends. For a single-class mage I recommend the following minimum stats:

STR: 12 - so you can carry something
DEX: 18
CON: 16 - to maximize your HP
INT: 18
WIS: doesn't matter
CHA: 8 - setting it too low can cause you trouble

To improve your spell-scribing ability, use potions of Genius where possible. Always save before attempting to scribe spells. For your starting spell book, take Armor or Shield and Magic Missile. Give your mage missile weapon proficiency and have him/her stock up on sling bullets and darts.

Take Imoen in your party, and let her initiate dialogs with NPC's if your PC's Charisma isn't very high. Let Montaron and Xzar join if only to take their stuff. Try to get your mage some bracers and other good equipment ASAP. Since you're already playing a mage, you'll want to add fighter types and a cleric/druid to your party.

Oh, and pick up that ring of Wizardry on the Friendly Arm Inn map.

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

I can't remember if xzar is anygood as a mage, but since he's a necromancer he does get the extra spell, dynaheir is the best mage in the game if judging stats, combine her with edwin and you can cast all the spells in the game, since edwins a conjurer and dynaheir is diviner they have the opposite schools, so if you pick those two up it doesn't matter which school you choose, just don't pick the one Xan has was it enchanter because then you can't cast magic missile, that is the only reason why i never have xan in my party, mage is useless without the best damage spell in the game(BG1/TOTSC) IMHO

Make sure you have some (1-2) shooters (Kivan is a nice one and Imoen would also fit) in your pack, leave Xan where he is and one or two meleefighters. You could go for Branwen and Jaheira if you want them to be able to cast magic as well. Then take either Dynaheir or Edwin and you are complete.

thanks for the tips

Thanks for the tips on Mage creation. After a lot of tries, I 've created a Mage with enough str points to be able carry things and found the Ring of Wizardry at the Friendly Arms (it is there if you load the Patch 5512). It's quite a different game if you rely on spells a bit more than on thrashing 'n bashing! But I've given her a sling and +2 bullets just in case......(chicken!) Wonder how I'll get on in Durlags Tower....
