Favorite band lineups.......

Post by Bloodstalker »

So just a kind of offshoot on the favorite band topic. I was just wondering about band lineup changes, breakups and such. What are your favorite versions of your fav bands?

For example, I am really a big KISS fan, but I may quite possibly be the only one who was actually disappointed when they let Bruce and Eric go to get Ace and Peter back. I thought that Revenge was the best music they had put out, and Psycho Circus was somewhat disappointing in my view.

Another would be Iron Maiden, with ****enson, a truly awesome force, but severly lacking in my opinion without. On the flip side, Bruce ****enson was awesome in his solo projects, especially the Chemical Wedding in my opinion.

Anyway, just curious is all.

Wow, Maiden, one of my fav group. They suck with ****enson (man that sounds bad) .

His solo efforts were quite good but during the days of "number of..." and "aces high", they were phenomenal.

Van Halen sure missed Diamond Dave although "5150" remains one of my favorite VH albums. Do you remember when that got that suck, Tommy Sharone, or something like that. sad days.

I'm typically a fan of the original members of a band. change is bad. I can't say I agree on the KISS comments. They were the inspiration that taught me how to breath fire hanging out on my parents rooftop when I was 5. :D :D

Who needs a shot of electric shine now. somebody stop me, I'm smokin'.

This is going back a ways, but....

Genesis with Peter Gabriel. But, his solo stuff is very cool.

Hmm, I wonder if it is allowed to mention Genesis in the same thread with Iron Maiden?? :D

Bloodstalker, you are not the only one. Peter and Ace should be gunned down. Bruce and Eric all the way!
About the other Bruce, even if you don´t like him (which I can´t find a reason, he´s great!), consider the alternative. BLAZE BAYLEY! That guy is other one who should be gunned down. Paul Diano or any of the other guys who entered the contest for new vocalist (including now Judas Priest Tim Owens, the guy from Grim Reaper whom Steve Harris turned down because he was fat) would be better than that criminal.
Roger Waters just make a gig on Brazil last week and it was AWESOME. He played a lot of Pink Floyd hits.
What about Judas Priest without the priest (Halford)? Owens is good, but Halford is the Metal God (well, according to him he´s the Metal Goddess...).
On Deep Purple, you prefer Gillan or Coverdale?
On Manowar, Rhino or Scott Columbus?
The old Black Sabbath doubt: Ozzy (poor musical skills, great showmanship) versus Dio (superb musical skills, poor showmanship)?
"No one expects the Brazilian Inquisitor!"
Abazigal: "Oh my god! They killed Yaga-Shura!"
Sendai: "You bastards!"

Gary Cherone....yeah, I remember....it was supposed to be their crowning moment according to Eddie, we all see how that worlked out.

I think Van Halen went into a more "mature" phase with Sammy. Not bad, but I did miss the uninhibited style of Dave.

Well, I can't say I didn't love KISS in the original form, I just thought that after several mediocre albums(can you still say albums?) in the 80's, they were just getting back to their roots. Besides, Bruce Kulick is a great guitarist. :D

Someone say shine?

@McBane,

agreed. Genesis with Paul Carrack and Peter Gabriel were a completely different real band and with their departures, they sold out to pop. Ever listen to 'The Lamb lies down on Broadway'. It's amazing and makes me shudder to think the band with the same name credits themselves with "I can't Dance". Ugh.

Beldin,

that's a pretty interesting perspective about the Floyd. I don't know too many who preferred them without Waters even though he was a depressed egomaniacal headcase. The real question is: Did you prefer the Floyd with Syd Barret or David Gilmour. "I want to tell you a story, about a little Gnome, in his home..." :D

@Leonardo...

I prefer Halford, but Jugulator is one of my fav preist records. I wasn't as impressed with Demolition though for some reason. Have you heard Halford's ressurection CD? It was so cool.

Scott Columbus if I had to pick.

Gillan for Deep Purple

As for Black Sabbath, I find it hard to choose against Ozzy, but I prefer Dio's voice. However, I still like Tony Martin personally. I always loved the Headless Cross.

LOL! :D Syd Barrett - such great tracks such as Bike, Arnold Lane and Effervescing Elephant!!! ;)

For me? Pink Floyd with Waters, though Roger Waters solo stuff is dire !!

What is the opinion on AC/DC? Bon Scott or Cliff Johnson (I think its Cliff Johnson ;) )

I like both, but I think the band itself became better as it got older, and not necessarily as a result of the new front man.

Definitely Ozzy for Sabbath...Dio has a great voice, but too many circles and rings, dragons and kings...this is not Black Sabbath IMO :) War Pigs is Sabbath...or Paranoid! ;)

I knew I was gonna take heat for that one. :D

But I still think the split was the best thing that could have happened. Ozzy found Randy, and Sabbath made some pretty cool music as well.

Personally, the one great consolation in all of music I have was that no one ever tried to replace Bonham in Zepplin.

@McBane, Scott or Brian Johnson, AC/DC has always been AC/DC. Can't argure with a kick ass rock band.

No doubt, they have no concept of true speed metal, and they probably never wore acid washed jeans (they might even snicker at the concept).

@Ned: Floyd with Barret was more blues / rock oriented ( on the earliest singles they sometimes sound like a Beatles coverband.)
There can be no discussion about Syd Barret being an innovative genius, but to be completely honest - I like the guitarplaying style of Gilmour more than any other. (And since I'm some kind of guitar-loving freak he has some HARD competition... ;) )

On the Roger Waters question : Since he left, the style of Floyd has developed a "nicer" feel. I can't really describe it in detail it's just feeling, but it's a lot less depressing now to listen P.F. while stoned...

@Leonardo: Definitely Gillian. But my personal hero is Jon Lord. Have you ever heard his "Sarabande" Album ? Not to mention the soloes for Purple.... :D

Ozzy. There can only be one....

@Nippy: "Ace of Spades" is sung by Motörhead (Lemmy rules !) , not Purple. :D

@McBane: Bon Scott sounds WAAAAYYY "dirtier". . ."I've got big balls, you've got big balls..." (I think it was on the "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" - Album...)

SO - "RIDE ON "
