Time well spent?

Post by Moleman »

POLL: What are the top-5 (computer) games you've spent most time playing? In retrospect, was it a) time well spent or b) time wasted?

1) BG series
2) Civ II
3) Rollercoaster Tycoon
4) Sim City 2k
5) Various MU*s

Overall, time well spent, especially the top 2. :)

Here's my answers to my own question (this could be referred as forum masturbation?!? :D )

1. Elite, C64 version (played this by far for longest time)
- a) definetily time well spent. I was pretty young back then and Elite was entertaining and educational (vastly improved my English skills). Among other things. I wouldn't change a single minute of it... -sigh- too bad sequels were crap.

2. Fallout (1&)2
- a) time well spent. Interesting world and unmatched freedom in the game, yet the plot is interesting.

3. Baldur's Gate series (mostly BG1)
- a) time well spent. I wouldn't be at this forum otherwise

4. Duke Nukem 3D
- b) time wasted. I'm a bit embarrassed about this, but when Duke 3D was new it was the ultimate audio/video experience which took me to its spell. Should have studied instead.

5. Civilization (incl. Civ2, Alpha Centauri, Civ3)
- both a + b. Great entertainment, I've always been fond of being a god (who wouldn't?). But in certain point it has turned to wasting time, when I've really not wanted to play, but have had an obsession to play "one more turn"...

1) BG Series
2) Warcraft Series
3) Starcraft
4) NHL Series
5) Commandos Series
[worth mentioning] 6) Civ Series (including there Colonize)

All well spent time. Since I play at the nights I´m not with my girlfriend or hanging out with the bar with friends; I would probably be sleeping if I didn´t play. Probably it would be better for my health, but not as entertaining.
Or I could use the time to keep writing the fiction based on the RPG campaign I run, which my players keep pushing me to finish

1)BG series. I think its obvious that every one who wants to stay in this forum will say time amazingly well spent.

2)Civ 1 (never got 2, got sick of three) on my first PC, which I still have. Time very well spent.

3)C&C series. After the first a hundred times- time wasted.

4)Rogue Spear. Time very well spent. IMO until Max Payne came out it was the best shooter ever.

5)Tropico- IMO its much better than any of the sim games. I'm getting the expansion next week. Time very well spent.

6)Commandos (only 1! 2 sucks! ) time slightly wasted, but overall not too much lost time.

1) Zork II - even without graphics, this is the best game I've ever played. The time was very well spent as my father and I worked on the game every step of the way.

2) BG/IWD series - see Morlock's comments

3) Age of Empires II - the better you get, the more it seems time wasted as it loses its' fun, because it becomes a race instead of a strategy game. When I first got it though, it was so immersive.

4) EA sports NHL series. the best sports series they have to offer. Incredible play with multiplayer/teammates.

5) Halo, it's only been out a short while but I've logged a lot of hours on it.

I just enjoy vidding so I'd say it's all time well spent.

1. Blades of Destiny on the Amiga...my first RPG :)
2. Donkey Kong Country series on the SNES - my favourite platform game! :D
3. Settlers III
4. BG1 + ToSC/BG2 + ToB/PsT/IWD +HoW

Relaxing? Try to relax playing EA Sports NHL 2001:

"Blasted game! How the **** do the computer manage to score 2 out of 3 shots! FROM THE BLUE LINE! Heck, it would be aceptable if the goalie was Garth Snow, but it´s HASEK! Cheating computer! AARGH!"

:D I know the fealing. And then you have to shoot 50 times with players like Fedorov or Hull, in order to make one lousy goal... it's the definition for the word "frustration".

I agree with the ever helpful Yshania :)

Computer Games are great relaxers...even BGII... Sure you have to reload and reload because of that group that spawns right above level 5 in Watchers Keep, but the satisfaction of finally winning is worth it :)

1) BG1 and BGII. The only games I have ever finished.

2) The Sims. This game would be a lot more fun if Hot Date were not incompatible and slightly buggy on my computer due to 'Windows XP'. But still downloading different outfits for my SIMS and moving them up in the corporate ladder is fun! There is, of course, 'Viv's house of male love slaves' as well... ;)

3) Tropico. Just a fun game. :) (I seem to remember talking about favorite games before..this is all coming back to me, or perhaps I'm confused) :D

4) CIV. Pretty fun, but gets a bit repetitive if one only plays 'nice'...

5) EverQuest. Simply put if you play this game, you will soon find yourself having no life as EQ is more important than anything else. I'm so glad the addiction is gone :)

2. BG saga
3. Half-life
4. Stunt 4d racer (something like that..)
5. Starcraft + broodwar

All great games!
Can I name just 5? :( :D

You can't be serious! Really? I played the first and when I came to the mines with the zombies and all, then I really didn't like the game anymore. Perhaps the 2e was better.

I just had to respond to those. :p :D

Quake 3 is so easy though, i can complete the whole thing in one evening

Theif is great, play it in a dark room with the sound up high, it is not everyone's cup of tea, but the sneaking aspect is brilliant :)

Quake 3 just rules in online gameplay. Somehow I like the "arcade" way of playing more then the UT way. Real players are more challenging then AI, though I like the single player mode too.
Ah wel.... everlasting discussion  :D

1. Q2 + Diferent mods (primarly Action Quake) are far ahead of anything else.
2. Q1 as the socond most time consuming i would think.
3. Tetris - probably very close to Q1
4&5 I cant really judge what these games could be.

Time well spend? A impossible question to answer imo. I've wouldnt have played the games if I didnt want to, but they are hardly educating.

1) BG Series, only because its sooo long. And then there is the replayability of the second. All those kits.

2) Civ 1, 2 and 3. I'm a sucker for Sid Meiers games.

3) Monkey Island. Personal challenge to finish all four games. Slowly making my way through the second.

Time well spent?

Lets just say it was enjoyable. ;)
