What is your country's drink?

As my friend's birthday coming on St.Patrick's Day, we (she's my house mate) decided to the theme for the party last night in a pub -- Drink of the World (or, was that "World of Drink"?

).

Basically, we will do pub crawling all night... sorry, all day, and drink as many drink from different countries as possible. Each of us have score card, and you get one point per drink, except Irish drink, which is double points, because it's St. Paddy's Day. The most points person will be the winner, and my friend will win it.

Anyway, I need to make list of drink from different countries, and, as the SYM and GB has so many people with drink problem from/in different countries, I thought it's ideal to ask directly.

It doesn't matter if it's type of drink, ie. Vodka (Russia), Tequila (Mexico), or famous brand, ie. Guinness (Ireland), Jack Daniels (US). Please post as many drink as possible.

ps. This is going to be in English pubs. So, unfortunately, there's no Asian drink, like Sake and Cobra beer, I think.

I don't have a drink problem but I think "Fosters" beer is our most famous exported beer. I don't drink so I don't know much about this subject.

The UK now are blaming our poor national health service on people abusing Drink.

Wales don't really have nationl drink, anything is good enough, something to clear the coal fumes

I know. Last night, we went our local pub, and there were a group of 5. They all looked really young... No older than 16, I guess.

We've been wondering about Wales, actually. We've got long list on Ireland, Scotland and England, you see.

Since I don't drink alcohol I'm hardly quilified to give a good a answer to this question, but I'll try:

Absolute Vodka - Swedish brand of vodka
Aquavit - Swedish type of spirits with some (IMO disgusting) spices in

Traditional Swedish spirits has a high alcolol content, 38-40%, and is spicy.

I don't think there are any famous beer brands from Sweden, the most common one is however Pripps Bla, I think.

It had been a problem for a while, i have seen people as young as 11 on drinking sprees

I think it is pretty much whatever one can get their hands on, there are some Welsh Whiskey's, but i don't know their names.

That's a tough one to answer for the US, we drink everything. I'd recommend a drink named for a US locale, though. Examples:
Long Island Icetea (v. good)
Alabama Slammer
Lynchburg Lemonade (made with Tennessee whiskey, Jack Daniels)

If yould prefer to just have a pint, I'm sure there are the obligatory mass produced US beers... but better offerings might include:
Sam Adams (patriot and damn fine beer)
Pete's Wicked Ale

Brazilian drinks:

"Pinga" or "Caninha": Sugarcane ale. Around 40% GL.
"Caipirinha" (translation: it´s a slang for people who live on the countryside): Famous drink made with pinga, lemon juice, ice and sugar. The secret is on the smashing of the lemon slices with the sugar.
Submarine: Get a small glass of Steinhagger and "sink" it on a beer mug. Use a straw to reach the sunk submarine and drink it, then drink the beer normaly. Needs DEX of at least 16

Rabo de Galo (translation: ****tail): Mix pinga and "groselha" juice. I don´t know if groselha is available outside Brazil, or even it´s name in English

There are plenty of them. Also, energy drinks (Flash Power, Red Bull) + heavy duty alchool (vodka, whiskey) make a good blend, albeit can be dangerous for your health. Isotonic drinks like Gatorade is less harmful but mix good too

I would say beer......but like Waverly I would not recommend the mass produced variaties. If you can get them, try something like Alexander Keats, Sleaman's, Granville Island, Nelson Brewery.....

Although these breweries only produce in small batches , so I'm not sure if they export.....

The drink of the U.S.A., sad to say, is probably budweiser or miller lite. I can't understand why so many millions won't drink from the toilet but are more than happy to spend money on urine in a can.

There are lots of breweries in the U.S. that try to emulate real beer, however, there can be only one Samuel Smith. Why drink anything else?

Oddly, my older brother's birthday is also March 17th, and he and his wife just had a brand new daughter on Feb. 14th! It's All-Saint's Days for birthdays at their house!

Drink: Try Ballard Bitter from the Norwegian section of Seattle Washington (has a Norwegian on the label saying 'Ya, sure, you betcha").

If you want to cover Mexico, have a Margarita or Sangria, though Horchata is my favorite beverage (spicy rice milk), but its not an alcoholic drink. In Colombia, there is Aguardiente, which tastes like a slightly less-offensive ouzo.

There are also some good Mexican beers, Negra Modelo being my favoirite. Lots of good beer throughout Latin America. Um, Largartilla - Cuba, Suprema - El Salvador.... that's all I can think of now.

admittedly, though, from my experience of Amsterdam - they do sell Heineken everywhere oh! except the beer vending machines

that was Budweiser...

@Minerva - you should know that tea is our national drink!

though that is boring. A good pint of bitter, personally I like the fruity ones - not the creamy pints

Also - do not overlook our revered Newcastle Brown ale - and what a generous size bottle too...if you try this, remember there is the street cred way of drinking it

Oh!! and if you want Cobra - just hit the curry house at the end of the night....most curry houses sell eastern beers...our local sells Cobra!

I went to a pub in Sheffield on Monday night called the Broadfield that sold Pig Swill and Abbot's P***. Both fine brews. Not sure if theys were a local brew( my best South Yorkshire accent).

Well said, well said.

For yet more good american beer (west coast style) try Sierra Nevada and Anchor Steam.

Bourbon is sort of "the" american liquor, so anything with bourbon is good. I think there are also a million dubious ****tail invented in America, like wine spritzers and sex on the beach, hop skip and go naked etc basically anything with a vulgar name, Zima (tm), and not to forget:

Oh my god, you reminded me of the Flaming Sopa!

Some years ago me and my friends were on an "end-of-party" state, when almost all people is already gone and just the drunks stay. Then we (already stoned) see several bottles of liquor with barely an inch of drink on it. A guy known as Sopa remembers the Flaming Moe and suggests we mix the containts of all bottles in a jar and then set the thing on fire. Of course, several attempts latter and matches floating on the jar it didn´t catch on fire, so we passed the jar and drank it nonetheless.
It was one of the most horrible concoctions I ever tasted. It´s regarded as an urban legend here on my city, but I was there to confirm it´s true! It was the same party of the orange-throwing contest.

@Minerva: Frankly, I am not certain I should divulge this information, knowing what you intend. This experience you propose simply cannot end happily for the majority of participants, and I have to imagine that anything that goes down that night will likely leave the drinker with a bad impression - I know my pub crawls always do.

In that light, I am hesitant to give you German beer recommendations. German beer is for savoring, not sloshing! Well, uh, I guess it is for both ... OK, you win!

Check out this site for pubs near you that carry German beer.

German beer brands - too many to list!! I like Paulaner best, but also Spaten and Weihenstephaner. Also Hacker Pschorr, Schneiders, Bitburger, Erdinger, Warsteiner ... Those are the common ones here in the US, that I can list off the top of my head. Over in Britain you may be able to get more variety.
