Anyone else find SoU game hard?

Post by Claudius »

My character is/was a fighter1Cleric8DwarvenDefender1... I was getting destroyed by the Slaads and my will to reload was giving out so I leveled up to 20. Now past the Medusa and even at level 20 I was not as dominant as I thought. I know I played a build maybe 8-10 years ago where I think I beat the slaads with Mestils Acid Sheath, but I am not sure how I made it that far with a sorceror or wizard with a lot of trash enemies and not many places to rest.

So I am making this thread to compare notes with people who have beaten Shadows of Undrentide.

If you did well, then what was your set up characterwise and tactics? I started off hardcore DnD rules and then played easy when I hit the slaads which was the end of my runthrough aside to leveling to 20 with the console just so I can see the content before I am permanently done with SoU probably.

At level 20 he plays pretty well with 6DR 5 defensive stance and 6 attacks via improved weapon specialization. I'm not sure if a different build with dwarven defender such as a fighter build would be better, but I wanted to make a lawful good paragon of virtue dwarf. Maybe fighter levels instead of cleric, but cleric really did give a lot.

I'm going to see how this guy does as a pure cleric and then take the DD levels in HotU maybe?

allCleric1: exotic weapons
allCleric3: two weapon fighting
allCleric6: ambidexterity
allCleric9: extend spell
allCleric12: improved two weapon fighting
allCleric15: improved critical double axe (or sword)
Cleric 16
Fighter 1(total 17): blindfighting
Fighter 2(total18) : dodge, toughness
DwarvenDefender 1(total 19)
DwarvenDefender 2(total 20)

HotU epic character feats TBA
21-24 Cleric
24-x Dwarven Defender
I really want the dual weapon as I think it is cool even though I am itching for feats. I also definitely want DD.

THE REASON FOR STOPPING CLERIC AT 16 IS THAT PRE EPIC DETERMINES NUMBER OF ATTACKS FOR nwn1

Realise that dualwielding will make things hard on you, especially this setup: you need STR for hit (and damage), DEX for the feats, WIS for Cleric casting.
I'd take Weapon Focus over Dodge, since Dodge is virtually useless. (Unless it's a prereq?)
Try moving the FTR lvls all the way to the front, so you can have Weapon Focus and get the +1 weapon from the Manticore? At least for my 4 playthroughs, I got the weapon there in which I got Focus.
You got plenty of Cleric levels, so your spells should be pretty good.

Cool, thanks. It's a choice between weapon focus and blindfighting (or extend spell).

dodge IS a prerequisite for dwarven defender.

It is a sub-optimal character, but that's because I have all these stipulations: dwarf, cleric, dwarven defender, dual wield, etc...

Back on topic:

Does anyone have the view that SoU is hard? Did you find a tactic? I switched to normal from DnD core rules so that might help.

I think you should stop wondering wether or not it's hard: you know you're using a suboptimal build. It's logical that that makes the game harder. I played through four or five times, and I never found it to be impossible. I had to do some reloadings of course.

I'm not asking about my build though, Gawaine. I did ask for YOUR build if you had success. If you have ideas for a dwarven defender please suggest!!

My second run on easy is going decent. It's starting to get hard what with the Green and Grey and Blue Slaads but my ultravision/darkness combo is pretty awesome as it cuts damage to me to 50% whereas I can see with my ultravision.

Another discover: summon monster lasts for 24 hours! So I have a dire bear helping me out :) And I am a cleric who can buff the bear ;)

I was pointing to an answer on your topic-title.

I played SotU & HotU with a dual shortswordwielding Fighter4/Rogue16/Shadowdancer10, which is a far from optimal build, since Shadowdancer is pretty bad. (But I was young and gullible...)
A full Paladin, which was pretty easy. Focused on Bastard Swords and shields.
Same for a full Monk. Especially in HotU Monks benefit from Kama's, when the enchantments outweigh the damage of your fists.
I also used a Wizard/Fighter/Spellsword, but you need the earlier mentioned PrC for that.

Which one do you want detailed?

Cool. I am attracted to certain features of my current build and I am hoping to make it viable just changing the difficulty settings. I played 1/2 of HotU with a epic builders guild ranger/shadowdancer/assassin that was pretty fun, but that was years ago. So I am still experimenting. That is a fun build with HiPS. I might like a Paladin/Dwarven defender, I'll see how it goes. Thanks.
