What could be a motive for a cleric of Bane fighting the legion of the chimera? The heads worship Iyatchu Xvim a son or servant of Bane. And Bane is not chaos like Talos who I can see might just slaughter willy nilly.
Some other evil but good characters are Ammon Jhero and Aribeth/Desther.
My idea is that he/she could be a racist Banite but that doesn't fit with a racially diverse party. A second idea is that he is motivated by power hunger and money hunger. But it still seems Bane would not want him/her to fight against Bane's own power structure in the legion. Another idea is that it stems from rivalry in the Hosttower of Luskan. Perhaps the legion is in bed with a rival Lord of the Host tower. That last makes the most sense to me.
Justifying a cleric of Bane?

Right Speech has four aspects: 1. Not lying, but speaking the truth, 2. Avoiding rude and coarse words, but using gentle speech beneficial to the listener, 3. Not slandering, but promoting friendliness and unity, 4. Avoiding frivolous speech, but saying only what is appropriate and beneficial.
It's been so long since I've played this.. BUT perhaps I can help.
Hmm, before the time of troubles..
I think I've got it now..
Bane want's Xvim focused on the "Realms" and his followers in Faerun, and doesn't like what they are doing that could potentially move them into Limbo.
Basically the "baddies" are too chaotic - so much so that they are ripping apart reality (in conjunction with the mythal), and that's just bad for business: (Tyranny, Strife, and Hatred).

What idea did you have in mind? I had another thought that they were different sects of Banites who each believes the other are heretics...
Baldur's Gate is set in 1368DR, BG2 begins few months later, in 1369.
Icewind Dale is set in 1281DR, i.e. before the Time of Troubles, along with the 'sequel', which begins in 1312DR
Storm of Zehir occurs somewhere between 'present day' (1373?) 3.5 FR, and the Spellplague in 1385DR, as the plot is driven by the effects of Zehir's appearance amongst the Yuan-Ti. I have no Idea when the other NWN modules are set, because I do not have them installed on this machine.
As for the various other DnD games, all I can say is that I Planescape: Torment occurs before the faction war. Whether that has an actual Dales Reckoning date... The battle of Emridy Meadows was, I think, in the year 569. (A separate timeline.) I have not played the other various DnD games.

Yeah, that's good idea. You can actually be lawful neutral as a bane cleric.
