A few ToB questions.

Post by Volcane »

Hi guys, just a few questions.

Having played thru SOA once I am now playing thorugh it again from scatch with ToB installed - with the intention of going all the way through. My party consists of :

Volcane (myself) Fighter / Mage / Thief (Level 11 / 11 / 12)
Korgan Level 19
Jaheira Level 14/14
Imoen Level 15/7
Viconia Level 19
Edwin Level 18

I have a few concerns ;

1) I chose a Fighter / Mage / Thief this time due to the 8 million exp cap thinking I'll have a really cool multi talented character but obviosuly I am levelling up slowly - will I be underpowered when I start ToB ?

2) Do I have to FINISH the Jaheira romance before progressing to ToB to pick up the extended romance dialogues - or will it continue where I am now.

I am currently in Chapter Six and have done all side quests except Watchers Keep and all I have to do is enter Suldenessallar but am reluctant to do so without knowing the answer to the above... should I do Watchers Keep first?

Help appreciated....and whilst I don't mind minor spoilers can I ask that I be left a few surpises/shocks?

Thanx!

I don't think the romance will continue on in TOB at the point you left off in SOA. I'm not positive though. I had done everything there was to do in ch 6 and I basically just waited around for the romance to finish up and then went on to kill Bodhi. I would finish the romance in ch 6 just to do it. You're tri-classed character will need the XP.

Speaking of that, that's a tough class choice to play with in a full party. You might consider dropping an NPC or two. You'll need the extra levels in TOB.

You must have reached the "How did the last battle make you feel?" dialogue in SoA. If you got that far, then when you move into the ToB areas, you'll get the extended romance dialogues (but not the ones you didn't see in SoA).

Be warned, the Jaheira romance is broken in TWO places with ToB installed (not bugged, totally broken). You'll need to use the console to advance the romance at those points, but I'm afraid I cannot remember them.

Also the Jaheira romance would not advance in Chapter 7 in SoA (nor 4 and 5). However in ToB her romance is active in both chapters 4 and 5, so may well be in 7 (I never got the chance to find out).

*JAHEIRA ROMANCE SPOILERS - FIXING BREAKS*

IIRC, the first break comes when Jaheira's mentor should appear for the second time (some event happens, and he should appear right afterwards), however the lovetalk value doesn't change.

After getting the "Dawn" dialogue, the next time you rest in an open area, Jaheria's mentor should appear when you wake, but he doesn't because the lovetalk isn't updated.

I think the latest full eng patch, and I know the kevin patch has everything fixed with the romance, you should get both anyway.

kevin patch has a lot of cheesey spell effects fixed, I really like it since I have to work now for cheesy kills.

you can either hit watchers in bg2 or throne, I recommend hitting in bg 2 as this will make the elven city a cake walk... I think I got around 2 million xp!!
They call me Darth...

Darth Gizka!

To volcane:
1) probably. And just to clarify, the xcap is 8 million, but I don't think you can have more than 4 characters in your party and still hit it (I did pretty much everything in SOA and watchers keep as well and still ended up averaging about 6 million xp with a party of 6).

Given your party's composition, I'd say you'd be better off with a single-class fighter rather than a multi-class character as your main character. Fighters might seem like boring characters, but they get the job done, especially in ToB. I recommend that you put three fighters on the front line - for example, Jaheira, Korgan, and Volcane - so you need another good fighter (even stronger than Jaheira) for the good of the party. So you can either change your party or change your main character. The new fighter you meet in ToB is awesome, so you might consider recruiting him if you want your main character to be a multi-class spellcaster. That's just my opinion, but I think you'll see what I mean after you've played ToB.

Although multi-class characters progress more slowly than single-class characters and are unable to reach higher levels, they start gaining special abilities at much lower levels than single-class characters. The reason for this is that any character who reaches 3 million experience points starts gaining special abilities every time he or she levels up, regardless of actual level. I'm very glad it was done this way.

Masteraleph is correct - the total amount of experience your party can get is about 36 million experience points if you do everything (inluding experience for opening locks, memorizing spells, etc, which is quite substantial). So divide 36 million by the number of party members you have and that's about how much experience each member will have by the end of the game. ToB does get progressively more challenging, but even the first few areas might be difficult if you're not prepared.

Watcher's Keep can be accessed a couple of days after you start Throne of Bhaal. All you have to do is find a way out of the first town you come to. (I hope that's not a spoiler.) If you think you're ready to finish Shadows of Amn, you can do that if you like, and go to Watcher's Keep right after you start Throne of Bhaal. You'll find a lot of goodies in Watcher's Keep that Cespenar will like to look at, so I think the sooner you can get them, the better.

Cheers guys,

I'm now into Throne of Bhaal - have just defeated a powerful wraith at the entrance of some temple (of which the name escapes me - but the Wraith itself imitated Gorion).

So far I've not ran into too much trouble to be honest. I had to re-load once when I got beat by Gronmir Ill Khan but that was thanks to Korgan being "confused" and wiping out my party. Apart from that I've got through everything first time - have had to raise dead a few times though.

I haven't taken the "new fighter" because I felt it'd be a step back as Korgan was so well experienced by this point (dual wielding/grand mastery in axes makes him an absolute killing machine). But was I right to do this? (I was tempted to take new fighter but felt he might be inferior).

I have yet to do Watcher's Keep - may try that next....
