CD version of IWD 2 and Win 7 64

Post by Ares2382 »

Hi guys,

I bought this game a long time ago when it just came out and still have my CDs from back then, but I was never able to finish the game due to some technical glitches that kept crashing my game in the same spot (all I remember is that was during a fight with a big dragon). Anyways, I just got an itch to play this game again, and wondering if my old CD version of IWD2 is playable on Win 7 64 or would I have to buy it from GoG to play it?

The game is basically unplayable, and I doubt it has anything to do with whether or not if you download it or run it from a disc. At some points in the game it goes so horribly slow I'm considering digging up my old computer and play it on XP instead.

And yes, I've fiddled around with pretty much any configuration possible, tried any of the suggested fixes for slowdowns at certain areas, downloaded the latest drivers, followed all the links for suggestions to improve playability for IE games in Win 7 I could find in this forum, turn off all background applications, changed graphics acceleration, sacrificed my firstborn and a litter of kittens to Satan...

And it helped exactly diddly squat.

I'm sorry Darth Malignus, but most of my IE games work perfectly on Windows 7 x86. The only one that gave me trouble was Fallout.

I suggest looking around the communities and Google for a fix though. IWD2 for me was one of the games that never gave me problems.

Yeah, since no one responded to me for a day or two I just went ahead and installed it, seems to work fine so far.

The only ones giving me some hassle are Icewind Dale 1+2. BG gave me an odd errormessage after installing the expansion, where I was told that I needed to change the language settings of my ENGLISH operating system to ENGLISH. Well, Tutu fixed that one, but BG etc. never gave me any graphics problems or slowdowns of any sorts, not even in battles against hordes of monsters, like the trial from the ghost in Watchers Keep where a swarm of orcs appear, or in battles with hefty use of magics.

I'll be damned if I know why. I've Googled pretty much everything I can think of regarding slowdowns in Icewind Dale played with Nvidia cards and/or Windows 7. Nothing helped.

The only time I've had issues with Baldur's Gate (massive slowdowns) is when I was running it on Windows XP, with an ATI card. When I had an NVIDIA card, I had no issues whatsoever. The only thing that fixed it was transitioning over to Windows 7, where everything (except Fallout) works like a charm, though I've found a fix for that.

Tutu did fix it for me as well, before I went over to Windows 7, as I've never had issues with Baldur's Gate II. As for Icewind Dale, I can't say what the issue is. When I first tried it on Windows XP (initial release of the game), I've had frequent inventory crashes though.

Why not try running it in a Virtual Machine or in Windows XP mode?

I never had any problems with any of the above with neither Nvidia nor Radeon, on neither XP nor 7 windows.. Hell, i even managed to run ID2 on vista! What do i win? ;)

Point beign, as long as you use the correct tools, there are no un-launchable games.

Why not try running it in a Virtual Machine or in Windows XP mode?
Indeed.
