Need Some Simple, Straight Forward Advise on the Quest Order

Post by RPGguy »

Please do not spoil me in the slightest sense.

I am playing BG1/ToSC (tutu) for the first time and am enjoying it immensely. Far more than I ever expected to.

In terms of the main quest, I just cleared the Bandit Camp and have been tasked with going to Cloakwood. My PC is a cleric/ranger multi. I am running a 4-man party with Ajantis, Amoen and Kivan.

Since it is my first play, I am trying to get through the game dying as little as possible, so I am *extremely* careful with each map.

I have no idea which content is ToSC as I am avoiding all walkthroughs or spoilers, but I suspect Dulgar's Tower is. I've cleared the tower exterior (all levels) and the aspect of the tower that ascends. I've also cleared/looted the tower basement and the first dungeon level. I am now about 75% through the 2nd dungeon level, featuring the Greater Doppelgangers.

I've reached a room with bridges over a chasm of lava and I've died twice with what lies within. I've come to the decision that I've bitten off more than my party can chew as we are averaging LVL 6 at this point. I have died twice trying to clear that room and want to stop until my characters a better prepared.

Again, I am trying to get through the game as legitmately as possible. Now that I know what is in the room, I can better prepare for it and clear it but this dungeon's difficulty is advancing quickly and I know I am in for heavy deaths/reloads if I proceed. So I want to stop and come back to it later when we are stronger.

Is it okay to just leave it and come back to finish it later when my party is stronger? I am concerned primarily about missing content. Is there any negative consequence to doing so?

Thanks in advance

PS. I have to say that Dulgar's Tower has been one of the most superb Inifinity engine quests I have experienced. Super props to the designers. It has been a thrill and excellent challenge!!!

As far as i know there are no consequences of abadoning Durlag's Tower and comming there back later. I've done so myself. (there are some time limited quests in BG1, but exploring the Tower isn't one of them. Unless im wrong)

I'm also pretty sure it doesn't have any consequences. So by all means, do get stronger. :)

You both can and should postpone Durlag's Tower till you are more powerful. The enbattles in Durlag's and the new areas up N of the Bridge rivals the endbattle in difficulty.

I have already abandoned the tower for now and I am glad I did. I've resumed pursuing the primary quest and am finding that my cleric-ranger multi (7 levels each) can easily solo everything now.

What aspects of Durlag's tower I did made me too powerful. So now I have to adjust from killing creatures that yield 4000 XP per kill to Taslois and wolves and bears :(

Never fun, reminds one of SoA unmodded where Goblins etc would attack your power party...

SCS II takes care of that. One of its best aspects is that as your rep or lvl rises the thugs and such starts saying "It's <CHARNAME>, run away!".

I feel with you. Durlag's is definately the last one should do.

However, if you like a challenge, try The Grey Clan mod, the last encounter there makes Both the final game battle and Durlag's Tower seem like childs play. Reminds one of SoA in fact...

I really like things that add plausibility. Truly, I do.

Forgive the ignorance but what is "SCS II"?

I know you veterans love your acronyms but us lessers find them a pain.

It stands for "Sword Coast Stratagems II" G3 Sword Coast Stratagems II , basically it's a tactics mod, intended to make the combats in the game more challenging and interesting where opponents fight by the rules and don't use powers denied to the player. Personally it's one of my favourite mods together with Ascension and must have for every new playthrough.

Thanks Daynov, you beat me to it- my ferret is sleeping on my arm, slows me down by "hygge". There is a thread in the SOA forum where I lavish SCS II with praise and another where somebody else compare the three tactical mods. I saw you active there and thought you knew SCS II. Sorry to not be clearer as I am not really a vet, I only pop by once a year when I do my winter run of BGII.

Daynov, thanks for the embedded link. While this is my first playthrough of BG1/toSC, I have played BG2/ToB twice through already so SCSII is definitely being added.

I don't like the 'item' tweaks (although the shield of Balduran is cheese and I refuse to use it) but the others sound great!!! It looks as though you can install the 'tweaks' individually which is super.

Edar, you are *still* hilarious...this time with the ferret pic. Why am I not surprised you have a ferret?

Most people for some reason are not- except me, I adopted him almost a year ago when he was starving to death because I love animals and knew his original owner (a small, beautiful and angelic half-Finnish girl) who was forced to sell him by landlords and thought she chose the right new owner. Unfortunately the new owner got a depression and forgot feeding her three ferrets, Peanut eventually devoured even the fluid in his joints in his attempt to survive... Jannie found out and rescued him, I had her on the phone crying when she left that other place with him. And I adopted him.

I never regretted it one second, he has lightened up my life and shed some sunshine where there was little before. Most people do not consider me hilarious; usually I am considered energetic, positive and very strong, but with a darkness in my soul that quenches laughter (I have some bagage ;) ).

I love my little ferret, and I have become a ferret-lover in general, they are wonderful animals.

Anyway, Tactics (which is cheesy) has the option to pick and choose many of the subparts of the mod. SCS II takes this even further, you can customise it exactly to your liking. I cannot endorse it enough, and do not worry about the Shield of Balduran, you will get a nasty surprise as you try it against the critters, it works (less effectively) and
Spoiler
they use telekinesis to take it away from you, so you are suddenly without shield against them...
Try SCS II.

I am a great fan of The Grey Clan for BG I as well, to get back on topic, but it has some horrendously difficult encounters and is sort of cheeselike in its difficulty. The story is good though.
