i am going back through bg1 w a mean evil party and i installed the balderdash bugfixes and whatnot. now, though, when i try to enter the nashkel mines, it saves the game and, halfway through loading, dies and throws me back to windows. any odeas why? help please!

Either defrag your HDD and/or reinstall BG... probably some dodgy baldurdash file.

Might also be something wrong with the file for that area due to a rip on the CD.
