New info on Mysterious Quest *SPOILER*

Just a tidbit I found that may be of sue to others.

You do NOT need to kill the ??? creature to get the stone.

I just had him drop it in the Western Val'lutra Forest (North), after only taking three (3) hits.

Apparently it is set as part of his random drops for Rare items. I would hazard a guess that it has a higher chance of dropping on death, but apparently it isn't necessary to kill it.
