Is there any way to not anger Ravel when speaking with her? Because I did, and experianced my first actual death(?)

No, she's deliberately getting angered, and wants to die, so you will continue your quest. She feels that she is holding you back.

I won't give it away unless you ask for it, but all is not as it seems.

Little more intrigued in the story now. For instance, the big green guy. anyway, it's to finally good to get back to this game. It's been sitting on my shelf for years.
