easiest way to improve DII

Post by Nekasrof »

Okay, the easiest way to improve Diablo II:

Hit esc key, go to options, video options, lighting quality, change the lighting quality to LOW.

Now, i never played with this feature before, because the default is high, and who wants to lower the quality of anything in the visual section, right? but we are wrong.

The game looks better in low lighting. All it does is make the shadows darker and more pronounced.

Walking around, monsters lurch of the darkness and take you by surprise. I have trouble finding doors because it's so dark. THIS is why we have light radius.

I've played this game for over 3 years, and just two days ago tried this. I've been talking to people on b-net, and low lighting is blowing their minds. It definately improves the game. If you already know about this, cool, but if not, I suggest you give it a try and help spread the word, because I have a feeling a lot of people haven't touched this feature.

Does it affect the fps rate at all?

not in the least. try it out. it won't make anything slower or faster, it just makes the shadows darker (very different than adjusting the brightness level). The parts of the map illuminated by your light radius and by your spells will appear to be brighter and much more significant.

another example, walking around, you can really tell when it's night. I could barely see my friend's act 2 merc when we were chatting outside of town. Other players have light aura's, but their mercs and monsters do not, and at night or in caves, they become hard to spot.

I could just make out the gray of his spear tip and the red of his belt, the rest of him was colorless shadow.

Odd... I just tried it, but all that happened was that the rain disappeared and the terrain shifted a bit  Nothing happened to the actual lightening...

I think the rain was unrelated. Don't just stand in town with it, walk around and strat questing with it.

I did, but it really does lower the lightening quality... nothing about making shadows more pronounced or whatever... could it have something to do with the graphics card? Mine is pretty old and crappy...

It makes indoor or cavern areas more atmospheric, but catch 22 is outdoor levels look really plain and boring.

I do like the effect in caves, but dieing because a Fantiscism+Cursed+Lightning Enchanted monster jumped me because I couldn't see him isn't fun.

that's where you and I differ.

I have yet to die because of it, and I like the danger.
