Are we alone?

Post by Vehemence »

Are we alone in the universe?

Personally, I believe theres no chance in hell that all this is for us. We can't be that random of occurance that in an infinite amount of space, it could only happen once.

So, I say we've got company out there...

Anyone agree? Disagree?
Cartoon Law III
Any body passing through solid matter will leave a perforation conforming to its perimeter. Also called the silhouette of passage, this phenomenon is the speciality of victims of directed-pressure explosions and of reckless cowards who are so eager to escape that they exit directly through the wall of a house, leaving a cookie-cutout-perfect hole. The threat of skunks or matrimony often catalyzes this reaction.

Looking at the numbers I don't think we possible can be the only sentient speicies in this univeres.

And commen sences (well - that small amout I have) also says that it would be arogant to think we are so special :)

(Even I can't loose at these odds :D
(Although I've lost with a possiblility of failur of 0,00895% :) ))

I would like to be around when we make contact with other species of life in the universe.

Something tells me that it will be many more lifetimes before that happens though.

Someone said something to me that kinda stuck with me a while back. They said that there could be species out there that are advanced so far beyond our comprehension that we may appear to be nothing more than an algae bloom to them.

Considering how different life forms have evolved here, the large probability that life can evolve in ways we can't even imagine, I think it's highly unlikely that life does not occur anywhere else in this vast universe. We live in a solar system, and our closest start system Alpha Centauri also has a solar system. Thus, it's highly probable that many other solar systems exist in the Milky way as well as in some of the other of the estimated 10-125 million galaxies in the universe :) (lowest and highest estimates from recent data AFAIK)

Btw, Alpha centauri B is the same type of star as our sun, so perhaps this solar system contains our closest neighbours... :)

Closest neighbours... and yet it'd still take more than a single lifetime to reach it ;)

Ah how I can't wait for faster than light speed travel :)

Me too! But it's not very likely this will happen during our life span :( But if or when it happens, I predict a major change in human mentality, a real sociocultural as well as scientific paradigm shift! :)

Should we meet extraterrestrial life forms, let's hope we don't extinct them if they are more friendly or less techically advanced. :(
Right now, we know of about 40 exoplanets! :) (Planets outside our own solar system)
