Need Canadians Help Please!!

Hi all you Canadians and lurkers!

Basically I've got a quick question for you. I will either be going to university in England or America/Canada. I know some of the American Uni's but I'd like to know how good the education is in Canada. Can any of you tell me if the Uni's are good and how high the standard of education is.

What are you interested in studying? Although I am not Canadien, I would assume that different uni's there are stronger in certain areas.

You are right I should have said

Mine main field of interest is History, thats what I'm aiming to do, or English. I've considered doing a joint degree at an English university.

Nippy my friend; I am no Canadian but my sister is in education in Edmonton (Alberta). She thinks education there is great ... But then she thinks everything about Canada is great - except the weather. UGH! I don't think I would want to live through their winters!!

Weren't those "joint" degrees popular in the sixties??

I have a History/Economics degree. I went to Knox College, a small liberal arts college here in Illinois, and would highly recommend that type of environment. Student/Teacher ratio was 15-1. Being in a small class is great.

If you do want to double major and attend a large uni, it is difficult to achieve it in 4 years.

(Sorry its not a Canadian school, but I don't know any

Yes History and English are considered the arts so I was advised about that sort of school.

@ Der Moench. I'm not bothered about the cold. Living in Newcastle for a little while you can go out in a t-shirt, that hardens you up to the cold!!

I would strongly recommend that you only consider schools in England. Canada is just getting too close to... er, I mean, uh, I hear the schools in England are much better for whatever it is you want to study - yeah, that’s it. If I were you, I would never consider any of the schools in the U.S. Particularly not those in the western U.S., or definitely not the Southwest. Don’t even think about Arizona. No, no, stick with far-away England, that’s what I say. Hmmmm, have you considered Siberia? Yeah, that’s pretty far awa- I mean, uh, Siberian schools are some of the best. Trust me.

Seriously though, I need your help. Where do you consider good Uni's are located? This really is important to me as I have wanted to be involved in Historical studies since I was 5! I found a bone in our garden and I was amazed (at that age) that so many things could be found underground. Naive I know but I've wanted to do this sort of thing for ages. How did you get into archeology?

Well, I must warn you. If you decide Canadian and historical studies, you might meet me... (Muwhahaha!) In Ontario (highest edu. in Canada, so recommended) University of Windsor, Trent, McMaster, Ottawa, University of Toronto... Thos are the ones off the top of my head. I'm personnally looking at McMaster, Windsor, Ottawa and UofT.

@Aegis.....there is life beyond Ontario...

@Nippy, frankly at the undergraduate level where you go is less of an issue.....If you want to study history, it also depends on the type of history you want to pursue....

For example....The Univeristy of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, tends more to Institutional History.....The University of Victoria, in British Columbia, leans more towards Social History.....

Also, do you want to study European History? American History? African History? Etc.... etc.... This can also influence where you go.....Although as I said, this is less of an issue at the undergrad level...

You will find similar issues in studying English....

I am presently doing (alledgedly

) an MA in History, and my partner did his degree in English.....so if you have any more questions feel free to pm me

Are you looking to play football? I'd need a Uni that plays Rugby and Aquahockey, those sports I need to play...

My favourite period in history is the Medieval and Roman periods. They captivate me for some reason, however I am studying more modern Italian history and Poverty in England at the moment (both in the same period, 19th century).

19th century Italian history is fascinating, truly interesting occurances, a divided bickering society in 1815, 70 years and they were united, amazing to learn about...
