How do you kill the Mother Rat?

Post by Drakton »

I read in some walkthrough that you need a lvl 6 party. Well I tried with a full lvl 8 party and still got my butt kicked. I have (dang I suck at names) the amazon, the dwarf and the elf with my lvl 8 Pirate.
I havent had any problem at all killing the other bosses: Da Vanya the witches et all... only this Mother ....rat
TIA

I killed that mother rat a couple days ago while I was working on the Moorbridge Marshes. It is challenging that is for sure. I used 3 warriors and 1 mage whom were all levels 4-6. I put the warriors into the "defensive stance". Make sure to have a person that can treat wounds ready and equipped with lots of bandages to remove any wounds that the party members receive.

Buy some oneberry juice health potions and wound powder, these can be used by all party members regardless of their skills. You probably noticed that every time the mother rat loses a certain amount of health, she summons some rats. When these rats come charging, make sure to put a warrior on each rat.

Since this battle is long, you can use the "Quicksave" function and save throughout the battle.

Note: In the first phase against the mother rat, use the party member Gwendala and keep casting the spell lightening against the boss while the warriors are attacking it. By the time the next two or three phases start, the rats summoned by the rat mother will probably gun for Gwendala, so she will probably die.

Also, before starting the boss fight, make sure to lure the wolf rats and kill them before the wolf mother charges to your group.

Thanks Jordan. I love this game, but this quest is frustrating :mischief:
Can't understand why they put this so hard quest in a so early stage of the game.

I did Ratmon with MyChar and Rhulana only at lvl9

When I returned from bloodmountain ruin, Rhulana(AMAZON)
get new Weapon named Rondracomb(2H-Sowrd 12/3) with Aydan event.
So, I think You are at same stage (you said you go through DA VANYA).

At this stage we have fairly good 2H weapons at our hand.
It's a time to try 5 Wounds quick Kill to RatMOM. TRY it.

MAGE at level 8 st+ Spell will enhance STR + 4, Dwarf STR will be 25 and Amzon's will be around same. And after witch's story we have some endrunce Pot at hand.
DO MIGHTY BLOW to MOM, use ed pot if needed.MOM isn't so hard.
I think Kastan Gamblack at the ruin is more though than MOM.
Her dangerous is her minions. Do wounds upto 5 quickly before she call enough her guys around her.

Today my character mage (elementalist) and Rhulana can get down MOM
and her minion down. MOM left more than 200 VI at her 5 wounds death.
Rhulana drink ed pot once. MOM call two set her minions = 8 rats.
That can handled only two member party (Elementalist use Fireminion)
After Killing MOM, Amazon switch 1H Saber and Shield style but with enhanced STR 25, she get easyly cut them down. At that time my mage and fire servant are gone (she got wounds from minions, yes)

Try it. Mighty blow with 2Hander is Fun.

I still keep Mom in Ferdok underground to see our member's capability.
That dungeon is very easy to access with handy warp function.
MOM and her minions is usefull for testing new tactics.

As an inside joke about RPG games like NWN1, where you have these "rat plague" quests at the very begining.

You really should leave the mother rat alone, until you have some more experience.

You should have enough willpower so that the small rats doesent wound anyone when they are struck, and forgrimm should be tanking the boss and he should have as much willpower as possible so he (almost) never gets the doublewound from her.

Also, I didnt think about the fact that you can lure some of the smaller rats first, thats a REALLY good strategy, I loaded my game there and saw it now. Only problem was that I was continuosly using a summon which ran right at them:speech:!

If you have an elf in the party he/she can cast meek you be and it will disable some of the smaller rats for 1 minute, I would advice to not overuse that one in the beginning since then you might need to fight all the small rats at the same time :)

having the clarum purum spell at a reasonably high level can remove poisons from one party member and make them immune against poison for a couple of rounds.

Obviously using a summon is really good except right in the beginning if you are going to pull some small rats first before the boss!

*edit* oh yeah, obviously it's good to have some healing potions..
