Early in the 20th century, neurologist Sigmund Freud put forward the idea than the human mind has an unconscious level, which he called the id. Freud believed our unconscious wishings and lusts would manifest themselves unintentionally, in a "masked" form.
The expression Freudian slip means that you say or do something by mistake, but the mistake you do, is revealing your real thoughts/wishes. A nice example is the Monty Python sketch when somebody says "Freudian slit"

One of mine: I was talking to a person who had long been behaving in an annoying way due to psychological problems. This person had started psychotherapy, and was telling me how much he had improved. I didn't think he had improved as much as he himself thought, and I replied:
"Yes, it's obvious you are in a very aggressive phase"
I meant to say progressive...
