Anthrax.
I'm sure we all know about the 12 cases of Anthrax that have occurred in the United States, and the letters the bacteria have been contained in. I decided to start a thread to discuss it because it is a major issue. What do you believe is the cause of the anthrax attacks?
Personally, I would like to know what was written on the letters that they found the bacteria in. I mean, all I know is that they are "threatening". A close examination of the words, and perhaps a fingerprint scan could reveal who is behind this. What do you think is going on with all this anthrax stuff?

@Sandy Whoever mailed the anthrax is probably smart enough to not leave fingerprints. A close examination of the words may reveal a lot or it may reveal nothing. It is highly doubtful that they have not done those things, even if they've said nothing about it on the news. I don't know for sure, but I would think that those would be "normal" procedure when something like this happens.

Also, considering one of the strains was cutaneous Anthrax - you would consider they might be wearing glovesPosted by SS -

What really worries me is not the anthrax in the mail (the dumbest way to conduct germ warfare), but what we will fail to notice while being distracted by this.
There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...
What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

Astute observation. I've been wondering how long a group of terrorists will wait before they decide to take advantage of our very loose gun laws. Mind, I'm not speaking here about the ability to own a single firearm, but the supposedly Constitution-given right for a single person to buy and bear 30 assault rifles.Originally posted by Sojourner:

So...I have to wonder when somebody with a presumably good reputation is going to walk into a few different gun shops, and begin buying up these things, handing them out to terrorists, who then move on a specific kind of building in important US cities on at a given date and time. Banks? State offices? I don't know. I just see a disaster patiently waiting for its cue.

I think the word Anthrax carries a lot of ghosts with it, since it's the proverbial bioweapon in any description of the term. This is probably because it was one of the earlier agents to become publicly known, and maybe also because a HeavyMetal rockband took their name from it. It is a really nasty disease in it's inhaled form, but it's not as easy to become infected as is popularly thought. It isn't contagious so you need to be in direct contact with the spores. An accident in a bioweapons factory in Sverdlovsk (that's in Russia) in 1979 released a cloud of the inhaled variant over the city (1 million+ pop), and only 79 cases of Anthrax were diagnosed where 68 were fatal. Before the Sarin attack in Tokyo, the same whacko cult (the name escapes me at the moment... Aum Shinrikyo?) spread Anthrax on 8 occations with very limited results. Had they used a more virulent strain, perhaps the results had been slightly different, but the main problem is delivery. Using the postal service, however inventive for attacking specific persons, is not likely to cause an epidemic, especially not now when everyone is on the alert.
Still, it's a pity the British spread the stuff all over Guinard(sp?) island. They've cleaned it up a bit, but it's still uninhabitable.

The direct use of force is such a poor solution to any problem, it is generally employed only by small children and large nations David Friedman
