Oblivion plane

I just started and dont have the info or intellegence to close the gate.
I walk thru a big flaming hole and occording to the walk thrus that I have read I am suppose to be on one of 16 planes.
The only thing in front of me is a large door .
I go thru that door and kill 4 goons then there is no place to go except into the chapel .
The walk thrus say I am suppose to have to fight some more goons that are coming acrossed a lava flow and then climb a tower to release a prisinor and get a key nothing like that has happened .
The only choice I have is to go into the chaple .
I have tried everything I could think of but nothing is matching the walk thrus even remotely .
I got 20 mins in the game and am lost as to what to do next.
I have read all the walkthrus I could find, but none of them even remotely coincide with my situation .

If you just walk through the oblivion gate, you end up on the other side just as if you had walked around it. To be transported to Oblivion, you need to activate the gate (walk up to it and press A on 360, spacebar on PC).

I would have never guessed that and you stopped the severe destruction of a decent Pc.
