Help how do you UNEQUIP an item

I have just started to play KOTOR 2 and I do not know how to unequip an item. I can equip and replace items but how do you move an item from your character to party inventory. I feel foolish for asking as I have played over 50 crpg,s but I can not seem to be able to acomplish this simple task.

When you have the option of selecting a piece of equipment, at the top of the list there should be a "None" option.

At least, as I remember...
