Need to uninstall AV but can't remember password

Post by dragon wench »

OK... I'm an idiot... :o :D

I need to uninstall my Kaspersky so I can update to the latest version. One problem... When I initially installed Kaspersky Security Suite 6.0 I set it up so that a password was required in order for any changes to be made..

Now, I was pretty sure I used a password I could easily remember, but apparently not because everything I have tried has come up blank.. *sigh*

This means I cannot remove the program by ordinary means.. (and yes, I've already tried the Windows add/remove wizard).

Uhm.. are there any alternate means of removing Kaspersky from my machine, or is there any way I can somehow locate whatever password I used..

D'oh.... I can't believe I did something *that* stupid...

Do you want the answer to your problems in English or in Geek? :)

Alright, I'll skip ahead to the solution part.

Delete the program directory. A good registry cleaner will notice that this creates a lot of dead ends, references to files that don't exist. You can have it delete everything that relates to the software. I prefer(red) to do this part by hand, as it allow(ed) me to view the directory structure of the windows registry and be thorough about removing entire directories and such.

OK... while I'm not completely illiterate when it comes to computers... I don't suppose you could spell it out in a "for dummies" kind of way could you? :D

What do you mean by "Delete the Program Directly?"

I tried uninstalling Kaspersky from the list (Start -> All Programs -> Kaspersky), and that still asked me for my password. I also tried to uninstall it going to Add/Remove Programs... which didn't work either.

Are you suggesting I delete the Kaspersky folder in: My Computer -> C drive -> Program Files

Sorry.. just want to be sure :o

Yes (I said directory, not directly).

Also, in case at the end of this you find you want the installation back the way it was, don't empty the trash bin afterwards. Leave the deleted program folder there and backup the registry if possible. There are tools for that I think, chances are they already come with the registry cleaner.

If things don't work out you can restore both the registry and missing files and work from there to another solution.
