I don't think it is possible to keep data while formatting a drive. It's much better to copy any data you have in the Windows XP drive into re-writeable discs or a backup hard drive before reformatting.rohitnairin wrote:I have both vista and xp as my os.How do i remove xp without any possible data loss?should i format my C drive or is there any other way
''They say truth is the first casualty of war. But who defines what's true? Truth is just a matter of perspective. The duty of every soldier is to protect the innocent, and sometimes that means preserving the lie of good and evil, that war isn't just natural selection played out on a grand scale. The only truth I found is that the world we live in is a giant tinderbox. All it takes...is someone to light the match" - Captain Price

Unless you manually go in and delete all XP files, there's not much of a way other than total format.rohitnairin wrote:I have both vista and xp as my os.How do i remove xp without any possible data loss?should i format my C drive or is there any other way

Although...I'd suggest you go the other way around actually. If you can find a way, get rid of Vista, not XP. Vista is awful, plain and simple.

Without data loss.. nay. Like DesR85 says, backup your files externally. Then format the hard drive and merge the previous partitions as you install Vista. The only thing you can't take with you are the programs you installed, so you'll have to reinstall them from scratch. Especially Vista wouldn't appreciate all the missing registry entries you'd otherwise be stuck with. You can still backup your game saves and put them back later. Just be sure you patch your reinstalled games up to the identical version the saves came from. Otherwise they might not accept them, or worse yet, ruin them.
