Ultimate Feelgood Songs?

Post by Georgi »

Ok, so you've had a truly terrible day. You arrived at work with a hangover, only to discover huge setbacks on the project your chances of promotion depend on. During your coffee break (when to your chagrin you discover the coffee machine is out of order), you receive a text message from your long-term partner telling you it's over because (s)he's been having an affair with your best friend. When you get home, later than you had planned, having had to drive through miles of traffic jams, you find a note from your neighbour saying that they found your pet cat lying in the road, obviously having met the wrong end of a truck; they took it to the vet, but sadly there was nothing that could be done... You stagger over to the fridge, only to discover nothing but the leftover lasagne from a week last Thursday growing mould, and the dregs of a bottle of cheap white wine. So, when you've ordered your takeaway, and you sink into your favourite armchair swigging the wine straight from the bottle... what's the one song that can bring a smile to your face? :)

Alabama's a country music group; Brad Paisley and Toby Keith are country music singers. The Alabama song has a lot of good music that just makes ya feel good. The other two songs are just funny and uplifting. :)

Just about anything by Jimmy Buffett makes my day. His songs range from silly (My Head Hurts, My Feet Stink and I Don't Love Jesus; Cheeseburger in Paradise) to fun (Volcano; Jolly Mon) to escapist (Havana Daydreamin'; The Weather is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful; Pencil-Thin Mustache) to introspective (A Pirate Looks at 40; He Went to Paris) to sentimental (Little Miss Magic; The Captain and the Kid).

Very little of his music in maudlin or depressing because Jimmy doesn't take his music too seriously. He's in it for a good time; after all, the only reason he learned to play the guitar was to pick up girls. If I'm having a bad day, I drop a few Buffett CDs in the changer, whip up a frozen mixed drink or two, then let Jimmy take me away to that "One particular harbour/sheltered from the wind/where the children play on the shore each day/and all are safe within".
Jesus saves! And takes half damage!

If brute force doesn't work, you're not using enough.

Your Feets Too Big, by Fats Waller.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

Particle Man by They May be Giants.
This is the funniest/stupidest song ever after the song at the end of "Life of Brian".

A couple other Monty Python songs: "Christmas in Heaven" and the one about the "galaxy they call the milky way" both from the meaning of life.

"Cold Feet" as performed by Albert King

A lot of Ray Charles stuff, Marvin Gaye. I was at Fatburger (best hamburgers EVAR!) and I did a little "soul man comparison" on the jukebox - I played songs by Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Ray Charles, and Marvin Gaye, watching people to see which singer got the best response - the winner was Marvin, followed closely by Sam Cooke. When Marvin was playing I could tell some people just wanted to start taking their clothes off ;)

There's some good songs from 70's rock musicals too: "Everythings Alright" from Jesus Christ Superstar, "Upholstery" from Phantom of the Paradise, "Hot Patootie" from Rocky Horror, and "We Go Together" from Grease.
May you walk on warrrrm sannd....
