i tried defragment my computer last night and it will not do it. i went to my computer, then right clicked on the C drive. went into properties and run the scandisk(i always do this first). it would start scanning then when it got to 3% it would say "allocating files" and start again "scanning files" up to 3% and start the process all over again. i had it set on 'thorough'. does this mean my hard drive is going down?
i decided to try the defragmenter anyway, and it did not work either. it's worrying me to death, thinking my drive is bout to crash.
another note-when i done the D drive'system save" everything worked fine.
The constant restarting is normally because something is running and changed the way the disk looks in the middle of the scan. Restart or ctr-alt-del and quit the offending program or applet.
Then darkness took me, and I strayed out of thought and time
OK, I restarted the computer, it still didn't work. i closed all the programs on the task bar. it still don't work! i have no idea what could still be running, but it comes up that scandisk has started 10 times, and that something is blocking it.
Are you actually sure it restarts each time? Depending on the size of the HDD it may take pretty long to defragment it and it might look as if it locked up.
You could try to start Windows in safe mode to make sure no fancy programms are running in the background and than run scan disk or defrag.

I'm curious about the necessity of even loading some of those programs on a regular basis. You might consider removing them as TSRs, and running them as executables on an as-needed basis. Then, you can use a good memory manager (like MemoKit) to remove them when finished. That way, there won't be the possibility conflict with every program you run.

"Explorer"

The only thing I have running besides these two is "Rnaapp" which seems to be the program to run my modem.
Make sure you don't have a "back up" program running, like "Go Back".
Screen savers will cause it to restart as well. Turn off it or just turn your monitor off. The time it takes to defrag depends on the times you done it. Once a month on mine causes it to take 1 and 1/2 hours to complete.

thanks guys, i finally got it to work. i don't open any of the programs on purpose, 'cause i don't know how , they come up on their on. i have a line of programs that line up in the task bar as soon as you start the computer. it takes up half of the bar(8 or 10 of 'em). they haven't ever stopped me before, but it's been 141 days since i defragged it last!

When you feel up to it:
Open "run" in the startmenu and type
"msconfig" and go to the menuitem called start - here you can view and disable most items that launch at startup - you might even find a couple you don't need
