So are Bush' numerous faux pas a symptom of a disability? or are they a result of not being prepared or plain nerves? Are we laughing at what has actually said or at him personally?

Personally - I don't know the man, but I do find what he says amusing from time to time. Especially the being part of Europe thing, when so many British are fighting against being part of Europe.

At the end of the day he is not the only famous person to have made a mistake, and not the only president.

Wasn't it Kennedy who is famously quoted as saying 'I am a sausage'? (Ich bin ein Berliner - or something along those lines ;) )

It is just Bush seems to have made more funnier mistakes than others. If I was the president of the US I would be content if my public speaking mistakes were the only mistakes I made, considering some of the other embarassing incidents world leaders have got themselves into. :D

And I agree - let's keep the board decent please. I am sure we can be eloquent enough to get a message across without swearing. :)

It is dangerous to assume anything. If a thread is likely to offend then I would advise steering clear of it. Ok make your opinion known if you must, but personally I would steer clear. :)

IMO no-one is personally attacking anyone on this board. It is supposed to be a fun and friendly place to be. Chill out people ;) :D :)

You're being verbally attacked for implying that a given language, a cultural artifact, is to be used only for heaping abuse on someone. A few nations see their language in this light--the Japanese, the French--and some of us who are native speakers of other languages have similar views of our own, much abused tongues.

Yes, I know that's not what you intended. But words whip and wind of their own accord into shapes we don't intend. Instead of reacting to the words posted at you, consider reacting to the reason they were posted.

Just my POV, for what it's worth.

Following this line of thought, I would be allowed to post all my post in a mixture of danish(native language) and english and/or other languages, and then wonder why people don't understand me (or misunderstand).
Again - this is an international board, and for us all to get along we need to post so everybody understands - mainly english.
Otherwise we (could - worst case scenario) have 1000s of people posting in their prefered language. :)

And Mr Sleep would be posting in that wonderful Bristol accent of his ;) <Yshania runs for cover> :D

<STRONG>To be honest, I'm offended by your assumptions. I have more respect for languages than you realize. I did not use your language just to abuse or offend. As I said, "kisama" is a word I rarely use. In fact, I think that is the first time I have ever actually USED the word. I rarely use such strong language in English and I never use it in any language other than English and Japanese because I don't know the necessary words. I know at least some of about five different languages. The reason I chose to say it in Japanese is because that was the quicker way to say it and the shorter way to say it. I fully expected most people on this board to know what that word means. Maybe my 'assumption' was wrong and most people here don't know what it means, but the people I've been chatting with for over a year now all know what it and many other Japanese words/phrases mean. Your assumption that I was trying to avoid the reactions that would've come of saying the same thing in English is wrong. I see why you're offended, but you really shouldn't be. The use of that word and that language has nothing to do with you or my respect for you language or me wanting to avoid flames(if I wanted to avoid flames, I'd have not posted that post at all). I used it purely for the conciseness and meaning of the word itself. I honestly did not mean to offend you. You may not have noticed, but I tend to use some Japanese often. That is because Japanese is my favorite language, though I still only know a small amount of it. If you're still offended and not accepting of my apology, then Bite Me.</STRONG>

I marely expressed I was offended and asked you not to pick words to offend other people, and dissapointed you took it as an attack. I am well aware you didn't mean to offend me or any Japanese in the board, and also you use Japanese frequently. I don't have any problem you or anyone who use some words in any other language time to time. However, use it specially to attack or offend someone is different matter.

You say you didn't mean to avoid flame or warning, and I believe you, and I also believe you love language. But, I disagree with "I used it because it is in my vocaburary and it was quicker". This is quite offensive comment even if you don't think so. I am more offended by your comments like these than your original post, actually.

I am just shocked and, frankly, dissapointed as I expected you would know better. I am not going to say anything more, as this could turn nastier, and not fair for other members.
