Don't wanna cross swords with fable...
...but looking at the title thread, there's no specifics except plain rpg.
So make mine (Basic)D&D PnP back in 1981 where the character sheet was plain and lightgreen, and I was fascinated by the different shapes of the dice.
As for "modern" as fable requested, make mine Diablo1, if not, then BG2.

Not sure if it counts, but if it does then Return to Zork.
If it doesn't then it was waaaay back and a SNES game by Squaresoft, could have been Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger or Secret of Evermore.

Legend of Zelda on the Nintendo.
Now that is going way back.

Bard's Tale 1 and Heroes of the Lance on C64. But BG1 was the game that really got me hooked to the genre.

Ultima VI, I think, though I've never finished it... Well, come to think of it, I've never even left the main island.
It was before I got internet and realised I can get some help from outside world (or buying strategy book etc.).

First RPG, was actually Ultima Underworld I, it was also the game the turned my interest from the adventure games to the RPGs.

I'm 700 years old - what do you expect?
First RPG: Basic D&D (yep - in the red box, with Gary Gygax's name right on it).
First CRPG: Wizardry. Maybe someone else knows different, AFAIK this was the first one ever - ? I played it on an Apple.
[EDIT: I played Zork, too, but very little - and I don't know that it could be put in the same category.]
Peace.

My cherry breaker
I was to young to be into DnD at the time but definitly my first hardcore into RPG would be the first Final fantasy. I loved that damn game, four fighters rocked that game. I eventually got into AD&D till my GM turned into a meth addict and I stoped playing, recently I haven't had the patience for most rpg's... sucks but well eh.

p.s. wanna know a *****en old rp? Check out 7th Saga... i loved that game too...

LOL, I'm exactly the same! It was D & D in the late 70s with my brother as the DM sitting behind his DM Screen, and I with a character sheet on a yellow pad. We would switch sides every once in a while.Originally posted by Ned Flanders
DnD basic way back in about 1979 would be my first RPG.
ON the computer, i guess it would have to be wizardry I on those old little cute macintoshes or the original Zelda, I can't remember which came first.
Then, it was Wizardy on my Dad's Apple II. Ah, those were the days!
That there; exactly the kinda diversion we coulda used.
being a late starter in the world of gaming, my first RPG was zelda2 on a second hand NES, but my second was final fantasy 7 on the playstation. talk about a good start

Believe it or not, my first rpg has been:Baldur's Gate II:Shadows of Amn --and I've stuck there.

Yeah, Square really dropped the ball with FF8+. the best of them all, in terms of story, was FF2(NA version) it had the epic story/hero, great interaction, good battle concepts. Everything. 3 was a close second to it, then Tactics, then 7.
also, I forgot to mention Quest for Glory 3, as my first CRPG.

Day in and day out I begin to like you more and more and more.
Ff2 North American Release was definitly a great story in comparison to later versions of squaresoft games.
I also used to love playing might and magic on genisis, even though I always died.
