The reason I don't just give them money, is because an offer of food tends to sort out those people who are genuinely hungry from those feeding a substance abuse problem (while I understand the need to escape, the reality is that when the 'high" wears off the belly will still be empty...).
PREAPOLOGY no flame intended

True statement, but your looking at this from your standpoint of the situation. IMO, based on this statement I find you to be a genuinely good person. This situation would make you feel bad, IMO of course, if you just walked way so you do what you feel is best for the individual.

Well, never have I been one to ask for handouts but there have been times, in the past, where I have traded my last five bucks for booze over anything to eat. It allows you to forget the situation your in. Yes, you have the possiblity to come down lower than you started from a substance but the high can over come this. At the time it was worth it for me, so I do understand the need for it.

BTW, I've given up being a boozer. I don't even go to bars anymore and the only thing I miss is seeing my limited edition Viking cue. Oh well, I made a wonderful place for her in the closet. :)
Nonetheless, I get really irritated by those individuals who feel the world owes them a living. I am talking about the scraggly drum beaters who hang out on street corners, whose sum total vocabulary consists of: Hey man, work is a bourgeois concept, oh by the way, you got any spare change?
Seeing that drum makes you want to go E~vil for just a second doesn't it. Well, at least when I walk by them I get the sudden urge to just to stick a pen through it.

When people ask if I have spare change I answer them honestly even when I do have change. It forces them to have to directly ask for the change if they want it. It they actually do ask for the change it gives the ability to tell them to sell the drum.

Oh I almost forgot to say I don't like these people either. :)

Not to harp on the drum beaters, but street musicians / performing artists are one of the few that I will toss a bit in the hat for, if they are good that is.

There are many artists trying to get a break and not enough breaks to go around. If I enjoy the show, I don't mind paying for it. ;)
