@ ss as i am the one that started the topic i guess that i am one of the people you refer to as
kisama who have nothing better to do than make fun of other peoples mistakes.
first of all let me say i am dyslexic and have problems with my written language so i sympathise with other people who have the similar props – indeed I sympathise with anybody’s difficulties even if those difficulties include ignorance and stupidity.

I do however defend my right to poke fun at any president of any country. I am not trying to lower anyone’s self esteem which you seem to have plenty of.

I don’t dislike bush because of his way with words I dislike him because of his political stance.

It seems to me that you in a way have apologised. If that is the case let me also apologise if you feel hurt by any comments about bush. My topic was only intend to be harmless fun and I think that it is - so here is another bush…

Though you are the one who started the topic, you aren't one of the people I was refering to. I actually never said that any of those who had posted in this topic were the ones I was refering to. I was refering to those who don't like Bush because of his speech trouble. As you just stated, you are not one of those people, of which I am glad.

Only one problem with that, Ysh. You would say Good Day in the afternoon, so having another greeting that's specificaly "afternoon" is redundant. Now, as far as I know, deutsch might be redundant like that, but I know someone who was stationed in Germany for a while when he was in the Air Force and he knows how to speak German(though not as good as he used to).

@SS. In a previuos post you said that you respect the Japanese language the most and that you you didn't respect Amertican English or german in the slightest. Would you mind explaining why.

@Fezek, I think she answered that already. It was the sound of the language, as I recall, that caused the problem for her. This, I can accept. That family of languages is gutteral by contrast to several others. Of course, English and German have subtler beauties, but in the matter of sheer sound, they're beaten from the starting gate. :(

Fable is, as usual, right. Also, I didn't say I don't respect American English or Deutsch. I said that they are lowest on the scale of languages I respect. As someone who enjoys linguistics, I respect ALL languages, just some more so than others. I hope that fable and I have helped you to understand what I was trying to say. :)

I doesn't really matter whether one is working for the government, a business or having one's own lab. Since seeking new knowledge is the nature of scientific work, it's impossible to avoid getting affected by and in turn, affect, politics. All science exist in the context of society, so unfortunately, you won't be able to "don't give a sh!!t" about politics in the future, if you are heading towards a career as a scientist, especially if you make important new discoveries. But this is in the future, for now, you can safely lean back and don't care.
<STRONG>
Basically what I'm saying is "Don't decide you don't like someone because they have trouble speaking correctly when you yourself have trouble speaking correctly."
</STRONG>

I agree with that, regardless of how people speak or write themselves. Let's say a person handles the language totally errorless, would that give him/her the right to dislike other people just because they make some errors? No, I think nobody should be judged as a person based on such superficial things.
<STRONG>
Gomen, but I'll not refrain from using Japanese words. As I have previously stated, any word in my vocabulary is part of my language. I don't know about those who live in other countries, but I have freedom of speech to use whatever words are in my vocabulary. While I do not believe this includes offensive language(such as "kisama"), I will not refrain from using the other words in my vocabulary. </STRONG>
It's good you have understood you have to refrain from using offensive words in any language, directed at other members. Still, I think you should minimize your use of Japanese words, since few people understand them. Most of us here are in the same situation as you, we speak several languages and all words in all languages are part of our vocabulary. Still, English is the board language. Why? Because language in itself and also this board, has one main function: communication. If I start using for instance Swedish and Russian words in my post, very few people will understand me, and it will also cloud the meaning of my English words, since people can't read the whole sentence.

Also, it's actually a misunderstanding that you have total freedom of speech here. As you can see in the forum rules (if you haven't read them, do this, you find a link at the top of the page), some things like disrespect to other members, promoting illegal wares etc, that are not accepted here. Don't you have any laws against for instance racist or homophoic propaganda where you live?
<STRONG>
Also, I didn't say I don't respect American English or Deutsch. I said that they are lowest on the scale of languages I respect. As someone who enjoys linguistics, I respect ALL languages, just some more so than others.
</STRONG>

Now, I'm not a native English speaker, it's only my 2nd language, but to me, the word respect seems confusing in this context. I understand if people think one language sounds more interesting/beautiful/fascinating than another, but I don't get how one can have different degrees of respect to a language, depending on how it sounds???

I wish you were wrong about this, but I know it to be true. I have already started considering how my discoveries(the ones I hope to make) will effect the world...and have even questioned whether or not I should go ahead and attempt these things...though I have yet to chose against doing them.

Ah, yes, communication. "The problem with communication is words."~Me Most of my usage(and knowledge) of other languages consists of greetings/niceties. i.e., Konnichi wa, Guten tag, Hola, Bonjour, Merci, Arigato, etc.; so when I use other languages, that's about all I use them for.

Actually, by my interpretation of Freedom Of Speech, it isn't a misunderstanding. In my interpretation, I don't include obsenities/etc. as included in Freedome of Speech. I don't know if the US has any laws against homophobic or racist propaganda. But I'm neither racist nor homophobic(I'd have to hate myself if I were, wouldn't I?). And as far as Arizona laws, I know the speed limits. I don't know any other Arizona laws, nor do I really care(because it's Arizona, not because I don't care about the law).

Well, like a lot of words in English(especially American English), the word respect has a basic definition, but the exact definition varies from language to language. Is there not a person whom you respect more than another person, yet you still respect both people? It is similar with language, in my case. I have great respect for Japanese because 1) it is a language and 2) it is my favorite language. I have far less respect for Deutsch because it is one of my 3 least favorite langauges. I have respect for it BECAUSE it is language, but that is where my respect for it ends, thus I have less respect for it than other languages.

In follow up, I must say that I have used the word respect so much in this topic that it is beginning to lose it's meaning... :(
