Crafting issues...

I have a whole mess of items that i need to break down so that i can get their essences. I have put the item on the alchemists bench and then used a mortar and pestal and it says i have the wrong recipe...

basically i am trying to get weak power essence from ghast claws...

i have the required skills and put the 1 claw on table and clicked use on the pestal on the table... the outcome is invalid recipe.

any ideas?

You do not require any benches to convert items into essences. You can simply do this in your inventory

No problem, I personally didn't even bother with crafting untill MotB. It never felt like a natural part of NWN2 to me.
