Floating messages are extremely helpful.
They conveniently inform you of the devious influence you gained over the unwitting henchmen and how close (hitpoint-wise) a wounded NPC came to meeting his Maker. The floating messages prompt you to check your updated journal/map, or otherwise faithfully nurse you through the whole game.
But the full potential of the floating messages is yet to be developed.
Let’s consider romance, for example. It is so obscure. No tell-tale body language; just trivial banter, a few words here and there (unless you play a "Let's do it, hon" kind of game). You have no idea what direction your romance is moving. Oftentimes, you don’t even realize you are engaged in a romance until the last minute.
And that’s where the floating messages become indispensable. A few pointers would enable you to closely monitor the intercourse and steer your romance in any desired direction. The floating-message-guided romance is virtually foolproof. Too bad it cannot be fully implemented in real life (as far as I know).
Here is the List of Recommended Floating Messages (and I invite you to add more):
1. "She succumbed to your shameless flattery, again"
2. "Your new aftershave grosses her out"
3. “He dislikes high-brow chicks – next time try to avoid such long words as pulchritudinous and concupiscence”
4. “Caution: his implant is overheated”
5. “You were undeniably effective in drawing her attention to your actions; it was the wrong kind of attention though”

Man's most valuable trait is a judicious sense of what not to believe.
