gates getting boring, ..... after the 1st one

Post by baron667 »

i like OB and am enjoying it big time. dont take this for a rant.

but those gates .....

honestly, i've played doom 1 & 2. and enjoyed them at that time of dos gaming.
now, i see no reason to have doom levels in the fantasy rpgs i'm playing right now, so many years later.

it is difficult for me to understand their meaning in such a game, but realizing there are 30+ ob levels, all looking the same, all to be closed in the same way, all containing the same creatures. how boring!!!
so, i'm putting my difficulty bar on lowest, hopping in, running to the point as straight as possible, one-shot slaying those boring monsters, avoiding picking stuff or ingredients.
and damn, thinking i'll have to do the same boring and pointless thing so many more times.... never seen this in a rpg, isnt this the biggest turn down?
i still dont know if it's necessary to close them all, but what's the point anyway.
if it were an easter egg to annoy the player - then ok. but not 30.
and it's not worth the rewards you get in there imo.

There are in fact an infinite number of gates, until the main quest ends they keep spawning, and eventually even re-spawning. However, you only need to close, at minimum, three gates. Spoiler:
Spoiler
These are the one at Kvatch, one outside Bruma, and another one again outside Bruma which is the third to last of the main quests.
The rest, even the ones involved in the 'Aid for Bruma' quest, are optional.

thanks galraen, was wondering if they re spawned or not. baron has a point though,am fed up slaying all the same monsters in the gates. Still an enjoyable game though.

You have to close a heck of a lot of gates before they start re-spawning, as long as there are unused sites they'll be used, and there are hoards of them. I can't recall running into a re-spawned gate personally, but I do know from other people's input that it does happen eventually.

The gates do get to be a chore after a while, I think the most I've ever done was les than two dozen, but you can pick up some very good booty in them. I've found Master Alchemy apparatus and a lot of magic rings and amulets. Also if you use a mod that makes Dremora armour playable you can make a lot of money, although they are very heavy.

I think there are about 6 different maps that are re-used for most of the gates and eventually 50+ gates can open, so there are a lot of repeats. There are a handful of unique maps used for some specific gates, most of them related to the main quest, but even they are still just dungeon crawls. About the only variety is if you level up a lot while you're doing the main quest you'll start seeing different (tougher) daedra. But as galraen pointed out, you really only need to close 3 gates to complete the main quest. If you have a completeness compulsion or if you just want to get all the loot from the gates (and having 50+ sigil stones to enchant your gear with can be a big advantage), you can speed run through the gates if you buff your chameleon to 100% or use a ton of invisibility spells & potions.
Can the answer to this question be "No"?

i speed ran thru the kwatch gate with no chameleon or similar.
they just chased me massively, yet they seem not to be always able to go thru doors, just some of the deadra did. when i picked the sigil, they started hitting me (just those few seconds) but i stayed alive.
yet, i'm already kinda tired of
1. doom levels in a rpg
2. those dark clouds each time i spot another gate
it breaks the immersion of a workd that is otherwise enjoyable.
but yes, some sigil stones could come handy. diff bar down, and another run thru the boring..........
