newbie question re:skill increases

Post by Earnest »

Recently started playing on Xbox, with a custom class thief/mage type. My sneak is a primary skill, starting at 30, and since I started the game I have been attempting to sneak pretty much everywhere. However the skill has not improved at all, and when I check on the stats page it is still at 0/100 towards skill increase. What am I doing wrong here? Other skills have either gone up a point, or at least are visibly on the way to doing so.

Since we don't know how you're sneaking, it's pretty difficult to guess what you're doing wrong. ;) My suggestion for how to do it right is to position yourself in a shop, to one side, a good distance away from the proprietor. Nobody else must be present. Try to get behind them, or at least at an angle from the back and the side. Then hit the sneak key. If it works, and you see that you're sneaking, put a small weight on the key, and go away to do something else. When you return, your sneak skill should have advanced significantly.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

Just to clarify, the sneak button isn't a toggle, you have to hold it down.

Thanks for the advice which has cured the problem.

I hadnt realised that you have to be hidden from view whilst in the presence of NPCs to gain skill- i thought that sneaking anywhere would do it, like in my old Everquest days :)

Incidentally, on Xbox you can double click the joystick to remain in sneak mode, so it is effectively a toggle if you want it to be.

Thanks again
