Listen & Spot

Post by Tricky »

From the description I can't really tell the difference between these two skills. They seem to do the same, only listen seems to have a counterpart in move silently. I can't tell and I'm a bit fed up with all the backwards descriptions. Is this like a sensory thing ? Like, if you're blinded or not facing in the right direction, you can still listen?

Well.. this is my first rogue. There are no stupid questions, right? I'm sorry, I just really can't tell the difference. D20srd isn't helping either, the pages won't load since the last Firefox patch. Unlucky.

Listen counters Move Silently.
Spot counters Hide.

I do not think that either has a directional requirement, and NWN2 practically fuses the "detecting" skills and the "stealthy" skills making them virtually almost the same thing. However, it is not known if the enemies you'll be facing will have higher Hide or Move Silently skills, which should affect detection depending on higher Listen or Spot checks.

There is the caveat that if you're effectively blind, then Spot would not work, and if you're deafened by any means, Listen cannot be used. This I think still hold true in NWN2. But unless someone does extensive testing, or hack the code, I guess it'll be guesswork.

I do note that however, due to the way I tend to clear off maps, I always detect stealthy foes that are in front, and never as they approach from the back, since those are dead. However, after detection, they remain revealed to me, regardless of how I face... until I round a few corners and move our of a certain range.

Hm, that is peculiar. Something else occurred to me, are there perhaps differences in the way magical invisibility and skill invisibility are DCed?

I think magical Indivisibility in NWN2 can only be pierced by magical detection. I never really bothered myself to push the detection skills with items/spells to spectacular levels just to test it out. Plus, you can almost never tell if they are magically invisible unless the mage is casting it on himself right before you... and then, I've always countered it with a Couldkill or Fireball spell.

Edit: I think there's little reason to be bothered by the Invisibility spells. There are items that provide permanent See Invisibility; which, I think do not work if the enemy is simply hiding using the skill in a non-magical manner.

If you only want to level one skill my choice would be spot. The reason is simple; it adds to the the DC of people trying feignt against you.
