On Use Magic Device..

Post by Tricky »

Check: The base DC is determined by the value of the item, and modified by the type of emulation the character is attempting. If the character attempts to emulate a specific race, the DC increases by 5; if he attempts to emulate a specific alignment, the DC increases by 10. Emulating a specific class does not modify the base DC.
I'm guessing a ring worth 500 gp won't have a DC of 500 + 5. How does it work?

Again what's the deal with these vague descriptions? From what I can tell, adding item value to the DC is a Neverwinter Nights only. Why then not explain how it works properly? I got nothing on this one.

Each item is probably assigned a DC for the skill. It would be hinted at by the price of the item, but not directly as you have posted. Price is just a rough guide of the UMD required; since more powerful items will require more skill ranks, but it will also at the same time cost more gold just because it is more powerful.

A pair of Gloves of Long Death +1 for lawful evil only monk creatures would have a base DC of say, 25. A lawful evil Rogue, would need a UMD of 5 to use it (20 +5 = 25, as NWN2 always assume a 20 roll with UMD), while a lawful good Rogue, would require UMD of 15, for the extra +10 DC in emulating alignment.

Unfortunately, I have no way of determining the DC of any single item; or know if the DC is a single arbitrarily fixed value, or always a sum of it's enchantments.

Hm. That's kinda tough if you want to emulate for a specific item. Oh well, I'll just have to try something else then.

Thank you.

We-ell... it is intended to be tough. But I've noticed that with UMD ranks that are slightly below max, maybe by 5 points or so, I've never come across an item yet that I fail to use; unless it requires a proficiency I do not have. At least, as far as the original campaign is concerned. Not to mention that if you also have high Charisma, you can further avoid a few more skill points in UMD!

Keeping UMD maxed is good if you're constantly casting from arcane/divine scrolls, wands, and using a mismatch of class/alignment specific items.
