Is it doable? I've been playing the original campaign without one and it sometimes helps that I already know where most things are. I don't have that luxury with new content.
I made like.. five steps beyond the Shivering Isles portal when I realized that I might need to activate the compass. But I'd rather not get back to línea recta questing if I can avoid it. There is all this gorgeous landscape and I'd be ploughing through it like a locomotive, eyes fixed on the marker. I am so tired of that.
Uhm, so can anyone tell me without spoiling anything if I can do without the compass? I dare not take another step into this strange world before I know for sure. :speech:

You might need it at times, unless you can devote more time to gaming to actually explore and find things yourself, it all depends on how often you game. But yes, it is doable without the compass.
Listen up maggots, Mr. Popo's 'bout to teach you the pecking order.

But are the ingame hints (notes, dialogues) for finding your Shivering Islands objectives adequate? I'm asking because Oblivion generally encourages players not to actually read any of the journal updates or notes, and all you really need to do is keep following your compass to the next trigger. A portion of the OC quests are actually quite doable if you just take the time to read a note or book

Nah, not at all. The only hints you ever get, shivering isles or not, is the "Here, let me mark this on your map for you."
Though I do have a suggestion. Search on planetelderscrolls.com for a mod simply named "Maps." What this does is it adds an item that's randomly dropped by any level monster or NPC that you kill (or steal from) and automatically adds an unexplored map icon to your map.
I don't know if the maker of the mod updated it to shivering isles or not, but with the compass turned off and this turned on, it's essentially the same as morrowind was, you occasionally got a map marker but sometimes still had to find things for yourself without much help really.

Compass option?
Is there soem option of not using your compass or something that you can select that I am not aware of? What are the benefits of not using your compass? More realism? Where do i find this option?

Have you ever considered that the sole reason for your existance is to merely serve as a warning to others?

Really matter for a separate thread, but in this case--there are mods that remove the compass, since quite a few people find it case of "babysitting" the player. If you're interested, check out the mods sticky thread.jeffmartis wrote:Is there soem option of not using your compass or something that you can select that I am not aware of? And now, back to your regularly scheduled thread.
