I believe a hero is what a person, as an individual, wishes to aspire to. A Rolemodel for that one person. Usually a hero has some sort of emotional connect with the individual, and can directly influence it. That's why I don't believe a lot of Athletes, or War veterans can be heroes to all, but they can be heroes to one or two people.

This would seem to be your main problem. What you could try to do is write a thesis on how one develops the infatuation with a hero.
