3rd Shadow Reaver - Chapter 3

Post by mammu »

Hi, All!
Carol here with a question. I am in Chapter 3 and trying to kill the third Shadow Reaver and his Blade Golems. I have as my characters: Paladin, Kelghar Ironfist, Neeshka, the Construct, and Ammon Jerro (to read the True Name Scroll). So far, I cannot kill all the Blade Golems without all my party being killed, let alone getting to the Shadow Reaver. Can someone give me a suggestion to get this done?
Thanks.

What protections do they have? Your team, I mean...

And I would suggest you get an Arcane Magic user in your team: Probably Grobnar, because of the protection songs he uses (take instead of Neeshka), or Sand, and Elanee (because she has some very good Divine spells), instead of the Construct.
This is one of those times Magic beats Might. Though, imo, Magic ALWAYS beats Might! But Might is very handy as back-up! ;)

Congratulations, Carol. Care to share how you did it?

For others trying to beat this, here are some tips (spoilers):

1. Get a couple of tanks in your party. The first few times I tried this battle I had my Warlock PC, Elanee, Qara and Ammon with only Khelgar to do melee work. The problem was at least two of the golems would get past him and attack the spell casters, disrupting their spells. The final time I replaced Elanee with the Construct and that made a big difference. Without a healer in the party, it got a little dicey, but healing potions filled the gap.

2. Buff your party before you head down the hill. I know Callum's battle adds a sense of urgency, but he is doomed anyway. I had Qara cast Stoneskin on all party members. The golems do more damage than a stoneskin can absorb, but it did slow them down. Also had Ammon cast Retributive Invisibility on himself and worked him behind the action. Since he wasn't casting offensive spells, this allowed him to complete the Name Scroll uninterupted.

3. Position your party strategically. If you have everyone march down to the point where the dialogue starts, they will be in the open and easy targets. Tell everyone but your PC to stand their ground before they pass the guard tower to the left of the road. This forces the golems to come at you in tighter formation which makes them easier to block by your tanks and easier targets for area of effect spells.

4. Concentrate your fire. Take the golems out one at a time and have everyone target the same one. This is a standard tactic but it takes special effort with NWN2 since the AI always wants to attack nearest, which diffuses your efforts. Once you take out the golems, Ammon should have finished reading the scroll so the Reaver will go down fairly quickly.

Points 1 & 3 were probably the most effective things I did. They made the difference between a very difficult battle and one that was surprisingly easy.

3rd Shadow Reaver

Hi!
Let me see if I can remember how I beat that 3rd Shadow Reaver. I had my character (Paladin), Grobnar, Elanee, Ammon Jerro, and the Construct. I positioned Ammon Jerro quite a ways up the hill and put him in Puppet Mode so he wouldn't cast spells other than the True Name Spell until he was finished. I positioned Grobnar and Elanee on either side of the path about halfway down and picked the spells they should cast (the most serious that they had memorized). Then the Construct and my character went farther down the hill to meet the Blade Golems. I had my character use the Special Abilities of the Silver Sword of Gith and some from the Rites of Purification. Maybe I got really lucky but it finally worked out for me after many times trying. I guess all it takes is persistence. Anyway, I am now in the Gauntlet and going to the area to take on the 3 Shadow Reavers there. Also, I did a little cheat code (I dont' normally do cheat codes) by increasing my party to a limit of six. So I have six from now on plus the Construct. The more the merrier, right? I'm now pretty close to the end of the game so we will see how long it takes me to take care of the rest of the enemies. Sorry for being so lengthy in my reply. Will let you know how I turn out.
Thanks again to all of you for your suggestions.
